Where do you pitch your tent when things go bad?

I’ve got it! I have finally found the perfect scripture to help keep me focused when bad days or challenging times try to throw off of my “good God groove.” You know what that is right? A “good God groove” is when you’re going along just fine being a happy little Christian. You’re doing your best to apply godly principles at work and at home, you attend church once, maybe even twice a week, you read your Bible regularly, and enjoy praying for friends, family members and neighbors. You do all the right things you know to do, and for the most part, you do it for the right reasons. When you’re flowing in a “good God groove” you naturally want to give more than expected, go above and beyond when there’s a need, and with the exception of a rude sales clerk who tries your patience, you desire to pour out liquid-love on just about everyone you meet. That’s right! A “good God groove” is when you’re secure in God’s love and you are doing your best to walk it out before others every day. Certainly, that is not to say that you’re some sort of super Christian, it’s just that you have a nice flow and life is good. But you know what happens to nice flows sometimes right? Once in awhile a nice, smooth flow has a way of backing up and throwing off your “good God groove.”

It starts with something like rumors about a layoff at work then moves onto the PGE, water, cell-phone and cable bill coming in at the same time and all higher than expected. You mistakenly balance your check book incorrectly and find that you only have four bucks till pay day, and now you’re stressed because your gas tank is empty and the price of gas is $4.20, $4.25, no wait, $4.30 a gallon. Not to mention the bigger issues that back up our nice flow. Health issues, marital problems, emotional break downs, loss of loved ones, rebellious teens and unreasonable neighbors to mention a few. All of these things have a way of sneaking up on us and disturbing our “good God groove.” Instead of being a happy little Christian with a “good God groove” our groove is gone and we’re wondering how to get it back.

Admittedly, my “good God groove” has been rattled more often than I would like. Not so much by the big things in life, but by a bunch of little annoying things that get under my skin and completely clog my happy flow. And I’m not going to lie, when my “good God groove” flow is clogged, it ain’t pretty.

During a recent rattling of my “good God groove” I began combing through the scriptures for a little encouragement and stumbled upon Acts 2:26. I had read it before in The Living Translation Bible and in the New International Version and while those are two fine versions of the Bible, I guess I never paid much attention to the verse because it wasn’t until I read it from The Message Bible that it all but jumped off the page and hit me square in the eyes.

It was so simple, yet powerful. So powerful in fact, that it helped me get back my “good God groove” and gave me confidence that I could hold onto it a little more securely next time. It says, “I’ve pitched my tent in the land of hope.” Think about it! We’re going through a rough patch, our “good God groove” is blown away and God says, if you want it back pitch your tent in the land of hope.” Great! Wonderful! Fantastic! But what is the tent? According to 1 Corinthians 6:19, the tent is me and you. “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple (tent) of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?” We are the tent. And the land of hope? Well that’s all God.

In other words, to pitch our tent in the land of hope means: to plant ourselves securely, right next to God and whole-heartedly expect Him to be who He says He is and trust that He will do what the Bible say’s He will do. Now that is a hope we can be sure of. And with hope like that, we never have to worry about losing our “good God grove” for long again.
