Are You Looking to Master Your Goals and Exceed to Higher Levels of Success?
“Leadership is the key to success – learn how managing the people and not the environment will help your company reach their goals and exceed to higher levels of success”
As the saying goes it only takes one rotten apple to ruin the whole batch. Just like it only takes one bad employee with a negative attitude who doesn’t give a hoot about the company or their employees to steer everyone off track and suck up every bit of enthusiasm, motivation and the willingness to exceed to higher levels right out of their body and right out of your company.
This employee can do more damage than you can imagine. A bad seed can destroy the positive business atmosphere where you work, and can make it a grueling challenge if not impossible, to manage and run your company effectively.
Negative behavior is dangerous and you should take it very seriously because it only takes one person to drag everyone down with him. I assure you where positive moral is non-existent there is no productivity going on and if there is productivity going I assure you that the levels of productivity are not going to be very impressive number wise.
Nevertheless, there is hope, and it begins by learning how to manage the people in your company not the environment. You will need to teach your employees how to take ownership of their own performance and make the bad seeds of the batch understand that their behavior will not be tolerated and if they choose to keep up this negative morale up than they are going to have to find another company to work for in the future.
How do you make employees take ownership of their own performance?
- Establish Authority – Make your employees understand that you are not going to tolerate or accept any excuses. If someone is always exhibiting negative behavior, blaming others for their own mess-ups and refuses to take any accountability for their actions than you need to tell them that the buck stops here and this behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Nevertheless, let your co-workers feel that they are working in a caring and understanding environment. Employees need to feel comfortable and not like their working on eggshells. Let them know that is room for mistakes, no one is perfect, but just like any baseball game – three strikes and you are out.
Remember if you want your employee to change than you need to help him or her, because most people with negative behaviors have no clue how to change. They do not know where to begin. Warnings are not going to do it. You need to have one of your employees (top of the line material) to help the negative employee (the rotten seed). Ask a productive employee with a good attitude to work with the employee on particular projects or tasks. This will help them by causing the good employee to rub off on them. Just as Henry Ford said, “you can do anything if you have enthusiasm.” Your top-notch employee might give this employee the right amount of enthusiasm to want to change.
There direction and guidance will also help them realize the right and wrong way to do things in the company environment. They may become so impressed with the top-notch employee and realize how valued they are by others that they may become motivated to want to change and surprisingly you may notice that the top-notch employee’s behavior is rubbing off on them. Just like when a married couple is together for many years their behaviors, thoughts and way of doing things become very similar. Where there is a will there is a way. As Linda Principe once said, “…not measured by how well you fulfill the expectations of others, but by how honestly you live up to your own expectations.” Something to think about…
