Before I say goodbye I would like to read to you a poem that was written by a writer who suffers from a disorder called epilepsy. Stacey is one of the millions of people who have walked down a pathway full of obstacles.
A New Beginning
There comes a time when the meaning of life begins to make sense,
At first we may not understand why things happen the way they do,
The sky at first may look dark,
The path one needs to walk down may be hard to see,
Remember the stars are the brightest when the nights seem the darkest
Look up at the stars and make a wish
Never let a disease or an obstacle control one’s destiny,
Never move backwards
Plan a positive, fulfilling future,
Never let your tragedy control your mind, body and soul,
Never give up,
Be in control,
Accept your disease or problem,
Love yourself now and forever,
Developing a disease
Makes you feel barricaded against a corner
Giving up is not an option,
The present is now,
Today is a new day,
If you stay down life will pass you by,
Therefore, each time you fall
Help yourself get up,
Fight the battle
Win your battle,
To win the battle all you need to do is try,
Winning the battle is teaching yourself how to live a healthy productive life,
Helping you cope,
Life may not always be what you planned it to be,
The road you lead may have some u-turns involved,
Do not fear,
For change can be good,
Follow the path that was destined for you,
The sun is now shinning,
You can now see your path
There is a plan, a destiny that awaits you,
Do not question your destiny,
Do not ask questions such as “why me?”
Follow life's journey the one that has been planned for you.
Do not be afraid,
Take one day at a time,
Be proud of who you are,
Walk with courage and your head up high,
Believe in yourself,
Focus on the positive,
For the footsteps imbedded in ground of your new path will become the solid foundation to you future.
At the age of five, my parents heard an odd noise from the other room; they went to check to make sure everything was all right, and were stunned to find me having a grand mal seizure. Shocked with tears in their eyes witnessed their daughters lips’ turning blue, while her eyes rolled back and her entire body was shaking controllably. Stunned, full of terror and anxiety they rushed me to the closest hospital. After hours of extensive testing, I was diagnosed with (encephalitis) a virus that had traveled to my brain causing me to go into a coma for four days. However, the doctors did not give up hope, but their prognosis was not optimistic either. They thought that when I came out of a coma if I ever did that I was probably going to have some extent of brain damage and the chances she was going to become paraplegic was high.
My parents refused to give up. They sat by her bedside untill all hours of the night. On the fourth day, my father's eyes were closed as he prayed by my bedside. As he looked up he was taken back for a moment to find my big brown eyes wide open staring at him and of course the first thing out of my mouth was “Can I have McDonalds French fries?” Good old Mickey D’s!
The doctors were astounded. I had no brain damage, I was not paraplegic, but when the virus (encephalitis) had traveled through my brain, it had caused minor scar tissue damage throughout my brain, which left me with a disorder called epilepsy. A disorder that has become of part of me and will never leave me.
“I may not be able to become a special agent like those CSI shows on TV and you probably won’t find me climbing mountains anytime soon, but epilepsy is not going to stop me from accomplishing anything I choose to accomplish. I will always reach for the stars because in my mind you need to believe in order to succeed. As long as I am living I am going to do everything I can to achieve my goals in life and turn my hopes and dreams into a reality. The past 22 years I have learned to help myself and as an advocate, I will do everything I can to help others who suffer from any disorder, disease or disability.”
You can make a difference too. Thank you.
