Pet Adoptathon is now the world's largest pet adoption event, with more than 700 hundred dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens available for adoption at the North Shore Animal League’s Port Washington, NY shelter and, thousands more at 2,000 participating animal shelters in 26 countries worldwide.
In 1995, Pet Adoptathon began simply as a North Shore Animal League of America adoption weekend, with the goal of finding homes for every dog and cat in their shelter. The first weekend in May was set aside for the event, and plans were made to stay open 36 hours straight. Local media were called, and special fun activities were held under their adoption big tent - all to call attention to the many homeless dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens at the Animal League in need of loving homes.
And it worked. That first weekend in 1995, over 500 adorable pets were placed in excellent adoptive homes.
It also soon became apparent that their overwhelming success had to be shared. And very soon, the Animal League extended invitations to animal shelters everywhere to participate in Pet Adoptathon '96. That year, over 700 animal organizations joined together, and the result was thousands of loving dog and cats found homes.
And every year since, Pet Adoptathon has continued to grow. Last year, over 2,000 animal welfare organizations and shelters participated all across the United States, and all around the globe.
Since 1995, Pet Adoptathon has helped over a quarter million extremely deserving dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens find loving new homes.

Please be a saint, and march on down to a shelter today or tomorrow, and help make this year’s 2009 Pet Adoptathon a rousing success. It’s especially important this year since so many lovable pets have now lost their former homes to foreclosure.
