Blue Suede Shoes DRAFT
January 5th, 2011
SETTING FADE IN:
ONE WEEK BEFORE VALENTINE’S DAY
Frustrated Marissa sips on a cold beer
at a new singles bar called Blue Suede Shoes.
Blue Suede Shoes is a new hot spot for singles
to meet other singles and hook up. There is a
unique twist however to this singles night club.
The booths at this night club have been designed
with juke box style phone booths, and the booths
each have a large neon number at the top attached
to a pole to identify the table. The numbers light up
green when the booth is available for conversation.
The booth numbers also light up red when there is a
conversation taking place. The singles interact from
booth to booth by inserting a quarter for a special dial
tone. They then can dial the booth of their choice to
interact with other singles.
No booths know who is calling who unless they wish to
Share their booth number. Marissa is sitting in booth 7.
Marissa begins picking up the phone and dialing another
booths number. She had seen a potential prospect at the bar
take a beer to a booth and she noticed this person did not smoke
cigarettes, and also carried their self with confidence. Seeing
the denim with a great pair of boots was a plus. The cologne was
familiar and intoxicating.
Placing her cell phone in her purse pocket. She picks up the
table booth phone, inserts a quarter for the special dial tone,
and selects to call booth number 4 before another booth calls her
prospect. If booth 4 becomes busy she looses her chance to talk
with this person.
(dialing booth #4)
Thinking to herself: God, I can’t believe I am here doing this.
I hope this is better than last’s weeks speed dating disaster.
Why do I want to date anyway?
(booth #4 rings)
With an erotically sensual voice Marissa hears:
Hello this is Manny.
(pauses with hesitation, she is never shy but
feels a serious case of butterflies in her stomach)
Hello…can you hear me?
MARISSA’S SPEED DATING MEMORY
The men there all smoked cigarettes. Several blew smoke in her face. She was told
that when someone blows smoke in your face they are horny for you. She wasn’t out
for a quick piece of ass though. Besides she found cigarettes excruciatingly
disgusting, and thought it to be exceptionally rude to blow smoke in her face.
How old were these guys anyway? She just wanted to meet a decent mature man whom
could possibly be more than a date, or a man friend.
FADE TO BLACK.
DISSOLVING BACK TO SCENE:
(LOOKING AT BOOTH 4)
HI MANNY, YES I CAN HEAR YOU.
MY NAME IS MARISSA.
(MARISSA WONDERS WHAT SHE SHOULD SAY NEXT ROLLING HER EYES)
(LOOKING TO SEE WHO IS LOOKING TOWARDS BOOTH 4 TRYING
TO FIGURE OUT WHO IS CALLING)
HI MARISSA. THANK YOU FOR CALLING MY BOOTH. I THOUGHT MAYBE
THIS PHONE WASN’T WORKING. I AM GLAD TO MEET YOU.
(SEEING MANNY LOOKING AROUND SHE
DUCKS HERSELF DOWN INTO THE BOOTH, AND GRABS HER CELL PHONE TO
PRETEND SHE IS TALKING WITH ANOTHER BOOTH ABOUT CELL PHONES.)
NERVOUS LAUGH: YOU’RE WELCOME MANNY.
IT’S NICE TO MEET YOU TOO. WELL EVEN THOUGH WE HAVEN’T ACTUALLY MET.
(MARISSA PAUSES IN HER THOUGHTS SNEAKING
LOOKS ACROSS THE ROOM TO MANNY’S BOOTH.)
(STANDS UP TO GET A BETTER LOOK)
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN, BUT WE HAVE MET
OVER THIS PHONE.
(PAUSING IN THOUGHTS)
MARISSA WHAT BOOTH ARE YOU CALLING ME FROM, IF YOU DON’T MIND
ME ASKING. I COULD COME INTRODUCE MYSELF.
(FEELING REALLY NERVOUS NOW)
I WAS HOPING WE COULD TALK FOR A BIT. IF
YOU DON’T MIND
(SITS BACK DOWN)
OH YEAH, I AM SORRY, OF COURSE WE CAN TALK FOR A BIT.
I HAVE NEVER BEEN HERE BEFORE. I AM NOT SURE HOW EVERYTHING
WORKS. I AM GLAD YOU CALLED ME THOUGH. YOU HAVE A SWEET VOICE.
(RELIEVED MANNY STOPPED LOOKING AND SAT DOWN
SHE ORDERED ANOTHER BEER)
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME HERE TOO, THOUGH I HAVE HEARD GREAT
THINGS ABOUT COMING HERE. IT SHOULD BE FUN. WHAT DO YOU
THINK OF THIS PHONE BOOTH BAR SO FAR? DO YOU MIND A COMPLETE
STRANGER CALLING YOU?
(SMILING AND NODDING)
I LIKE THE IDEA. I AM FLATTERED TOO SINCE I THINK YOU
SEEN ME BEFORE YOU CALLED ME THOUGH, SO THAT MAKES ME
FEEL MORE RELAXED. BUT YOU HAVE THE ADVANTAGE SINCE
I HAVEN’T SEEN YOU. I HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO LATER.
(SMILING AND LOOKING OVER THE BOOTH AT MANNY)
YES I THINK WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO THAT. I LIKE THE
MYSTERIOUSNESS OF THIS FOR SOME REASON. I SEEN YOU
LOOKING FOR WHO WAS CALLING YOU.
(MARISSA SMILES AND LAUGHS)
OH YOU ARE WATCHING ME ARE YOU?
(LAUGHING AND LOOKING OVER THE BOOTH SEATS
TO SEE IS WHO IS LOOKING BACK)
I HAVE TO ADMIT I AM LIKING THE MYSTERIOUSNESS TOO,
THIS IS TURNING OUT TO BE RATHER FUN.
(HEARS MARISSA GIGGLING)
I WOULD LIKE TO BUY YOU A DRINK. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MARISSA?
OH YOU’RE GOOD, AND IF I LET YOU ORDER ME A
DRINK YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW MY PHONE BOOTH NUMBER.
YES, I WOULD NEED TO KNOW YOUR BOOTH NUMBER,
BUT OK, I WILL WAIT FOR YOU. ARE YOU
ALWAYS SO MYSTERIOUS? WHAT ARE YOU DRINKING?
I AM DRINKING A LAGER.
(MOTIONING FOR THE WAITRESS)
IS THAT SAMUEL ADAMS? I LOVE SAMUEL ADAMS.
(WRITING A NOTE ON A NAPKIN)
YES, IT IS! SAMMY IS THE BEST BREW.
(WAITRESS COMES TO MARISSA’S BOOTH. MARISSA ORDERS
A SAMUEL ADAMS’ LAGER FROM THE WAITRESS FOR MANNY’S BOOTH)
HAVE YOU TASTED THE WINTER COLLECTION?
THE CHOCOLA BOCK IS REALLY GOOD.
YEAH, I LIKE THE WINTER LAGER AND THE OLE FEZZIE WIG.
(MOTIONS FOR THE WAITRESS, GIVING HER THE NAPKIN NOTE)
(LOOKING TO SEE MANNY)
DO YOU LIKE TO GRILL OUTDOORS MANNY?
YES, I LOVE TO GRILL OUT OVER CHARCOALS. YOU JUST
GOTTA HAVE CHARCOALS FOR GOOD FLAVOR.
(WAITRESS GIVES MANNY THE BEER. HE SMILES AND NODS)
(GIGGLING AS SHE SEES MANNY’S REACTION)
YOU COULDN’T ORDER ME A BEER, BUT I COULD ORDER YOU ONE.
I KNOW THIS ISN’T QUITE FAIR IS IT?
I AM NOT USED TO THIS.
(WAITRESS GIVES MARISSA ANOTHER BEER.
WAITRESS TELLS HER THE DRINK IS FROM
TABLE BOOTH 4 AND GIVES MARISSA A
NAPKIN NOTE FROM MANNY-REASSURES HER
BOOTH 4 DOESN’T KNOW HER BOOTH NUMBER)
WELL NO THIS ISN’T FAIR IS IT?
(MARISSA READS THE NAPKIN NOTE.)
(GOES TO THE JUKE BOX AND INSERTS MONEY.
FIRST SONG BEGINS TO PLAY AS MANNY LOOKS
OVER HIS SHOULDER.)
(TO BE CONTINUED)
