(((debra)))

thank you for your informative article on spanking, or not to spank

i am divided on the issue...i don't believe kids should be hit, but what to do when the child is totally out of control, and will not respond to talking, time out, removal of privileges, groundings? what is a parent to do when the child is cursing you, hitting you, defying you every step of the way? i wouldn't be able to keep my cool, i know that

i had one son, lost custody of him when he was two, haven't seen him since he was six...not because of any abuse, because my ex husband was better off financially to care for him...i only slapped him once, because he bit me, and ohhhhhh, i felt so bad...because i was reacting in anger and not in love...i said, never again...

i was spanked...but what hurt worse was the sudden hand upside the face...no warning...or the verbal abuse...called worthless and much worse...i still live with the pain of that...

thank you for your courage in standing up for children.

(((HUGS))) and love,

karla. :(

i remember being spanked, too, as a child, but i don't consider myself abused physically, and i am certainly not damaged by it. i am a better person because even though the spankings hurt, they taught me to mind, and i am from the old school on this. you may not agree with my views, and that is okay, but it is better than having a kid run amuck or acting like their friend instead of their parent; give me old fashioned discipline any day!

Thank you! I was 'spanked' with a wooden paddle, and I can tell you that it did nothing but make me hate my father-- I certainly couldn't love someone who kept hurting me every time I did something he didn't like. I don't think parents give kids enough credit for how long they will remember things... they seem to think it's ok to hit kids because 'they'll never remember this in 10 years.' I'm proof that they WILL.
