Anna Nicole WhatsHerName
Essay - Unpublished

For weeks now, it seems we have been unable to escape the media's coverage of everything related to Anna Nicole Smith and all the idiotic goings-on about her estate, her child, her marital status and anything else the dozens of lawyers object to before a judge who strikes me as having been formerly a member of the Keystone Cops.

Let me review some of my wonderings:

Can you recall what your mother long ago called the girls who got pregnant out of wedlock and could not even subsequently name the father? Okay, perhaps she was married to the father of the child so why is everyone trying to prove otherwise?

Why is the media now attempting to portray ANS as an adorable whatever with a wonderful personality who should rightfully be a role model for our easily impressed young folks? Is money-grabbing now a sexual requirement for physically enhanced blonds, even if brain surgery was not part of that enhancement?

Could it be that this is not really a paternity issue but rather about the huge trust fund that would be available to the happy winner of all these legal wranglings?

Are they really going to rename Court TV to ANS TV? For now, I guess this would be appropriate since every time I tune to this channel, there is extensive coverage of the latest ANS debacle, drummed up by the various factions and their attorneys.

Are you watching the bumblings of this judge in the Bahamas who apparently is doing all he can to position himself to be on the next reality show in the making?

I have some suggestions, which would significantly shorten the length of court hearings and media coverage thereof and I cannot help but to assume this to be a very good thing.

  1. Instruct all the attorneys that this matter will, henceforth, be handled pro-bono by them and

  2. Surrender the child to the appropriate foster-care system, along with any trust fund appertaining thereto.

These two measures will undoubtedly shorten the entire fiasco to about five more minutes and the media will then be able to concentrate on subsequent legal maneuvers between foster-care agencies. Aside from that, Court TV will be able to reclaim its name and, once again, cover the much more sane proceedings of wives killing their husbands, mothers killing their children and government officials lying to the FBI and the public, however unbelievable the latter may be.

Wolf,
I agree that there are much more important issues the media should have been covering at the time. They paid far too much attention to the ANS personal life; and not enough media attention was given to important news.

In regards to the saga of the ever-ending media coverage...of ANS, it is time to let her rest along with all her baggage. Pray for the gracious descent upbringing of the beautiful Danielle.
Lets face it, we all are human, imperfect and have skeletons in our closets.

Remember that saying, perhaps your old-haired granny whispered to you, "Don't throw stones, no house is built out of glass"
Thanks for the article, writing is good for the soul.

In response to this article, I have received a separate message from another author. Since I believe that opposing views communicated by people with integrity, honor and courage should be heard, I am posting these messages here (unedited) in the interest of full disclosure.

Have you ever been in foster care? Or known someone who has? Have you ever been so close yet so far from someone who was as far beyond help as Anna was? Or loved someone like Anna because perhaps she was your daughter, your sister or you mother? Do you understand that kind of pain, born out of familial bond?

I too am sickened by the redundant and exploitive coverage of everything from her lovers to her poor little girl, but the woman DID die. Is nothing sacred?

You, sir, have taken part, by writing the typical "Anna" article, in exploitive and utterly insensitive commentary, just like everyone you bash.

Dear Rose Loya:

Your comments are sincerely appreciated and I am happy to hear the other side of it. But, and there are several of those, we all have our own very hurtful and negative experiences growing up and I would not like to think that such non-loving influences doom us to become shallow exploitive persons. Yes, she DID die, from an overdose of drugs, which I suppose could be a defense mechanism to all the things you talk about.

I do object that ANS is now portrayed as an icon she never was, living her life as a Mother Theresa, rather than being honestly portrayed as being a doped up addict who would slur her words and who, at times, could barely speak a coherent sentence. If she did not have money to pass on, who would care about THAT baby in the scheme of things you speak about?

If it is okay with, I shall post your comment on the website since I am always in favor of opposional views to be heard.

Finally, could you please explain your final comment "just like everyone you bash." I cannot recall having bashed anyone yet, although I would not be surprised if I may do so in the future.

Sincerely,
C Wolf Forrest

Hi C Wolf Forrest:

First of all, thank you for your considerate response. I admire the way you handled my comment.

The question about the baby, or THAT baby. With all due respect, do you have any children? I have two and as a mother I can tell you exactly who cares about that little girl. Her father. It's really none of anybody's business WHO he is but judging by the pictures, I'd say it's the photographer.

Wouldn't it be heroic though, of whomever her father is, for him to say no to the money? Would you? I know people who have. I know people who have walked away from million dollar homes with only the clothes on their backs and THEIR babies. But since I only know three, I think it's safe to say that it doesn't happen too often.

With the "price-tag" of that elusive inheritance it WOULD seem as though everyone around the little girl is there for the money. But I can't help but think that the tragic example set by her mother has possibly set in motion purer intentions from those around her, especially her father.

Oh, the "bashing" would include the judge, the media, Court TV and "this Bahamian judge". Maybe "bash" wasn't the correct word, I don't know, but I don't really care, as I am disgusted by the all-around lack of compassion and sensitivity when it comes to this woman's death.

Hi C Wolf Forrest:

Thanks again for your diplomatic response. I don't always handle opposing views with such grace, but in the future I will try to follow the example you set. Again, thank you.

Sincerely, Rose
