The worst floods to hit England in living memory have claimed lives displaced thousands and caused chaos across the country.
The worst floods to hit England in living memory have claimed lives, displaced thousands, and caused chaos across the country. A months worth of rain has fallen in less than 36 hours. The average area rainfall for June is usually about 68 mm. So far this month 269mm has fallen. My own experience of this disaster is immediate, living in one of the worst hit areas in the county of South Yorkshire. Virtually all the towns in the county have been affected. The city of Sheffield was swamped in minutes and people trapped by the rising waters had to be airlifted to safety. Unfortunately three people in this area have lost their lives. Many people have been forced to leave their submerged homes and thousands more face evacuation as the Ullay dam threatens the to burst it's banks and deposit 4 billon tonnes of water into the Rother valley. I have been more fortunate than most living in Doncaster, although I live quite near the river there is a flood plain and quite a rise in land level for it to breech into our streets. However, the sheer volume of rain still left a foot of water in my cellar (basement), and I've spent most of the day throwing lots of my stuff away. I took a video yesterday morning at a favourite area of mine two hours after I left the area it was sealed off as the river had risen another two meters virtually cutting off the village of Sprotbrough.
