Should we reward in Childrens Church or Not? My personal opinions on this matter....

To Rewad or Not To Reward Monday, August 20, 2007 - 10:56 PM
I've been working in a small church where many of the children come from low income families for several years now, and I do often give these children rewards for things like memorizing the verses, or adding there input to the lesson and truthfully I do not see anything wrong with that, I know from reading the most recent issue of Childrens Ministry magazine many may not agree with the rewards I do not see any harm done, and my awards are generally small awards, and useful a Bible for a child who does not have a Bible pens, papers, Binders for those who may need them for school sometimes it will be a cheap toy something I pick up at wal mart or the dollar tree for the preschool aged children and sometimes it will even be something like a bottle of juice for them to take home to share with there family. I have never given away anything like a bike, because I would not feel right giving a bike away to one child and not another and though I may have a small class, of varying ages, a handful of bikes would not be a practical purchase when the money could be better used to advance the minisntry in other ways.

As a teacher we are encouraged to give small rewards for good behavior or for excelling in their academics, or even good attendance. I agree it does seem that many children do not have much to look forward to today, so a small reward can go a long way! The smiles on their faces says it all my friend! The word in their heart clarifies that! Always remember that when we do good for the Lord there will be those whom speak negative against us, the enemy is always on his job trying to tear down and keep a constant quarrel or doubt in alive. Write on and teach on!
Blessings,
Joyce B.
