The latest issue of Women’s Health magazine carries a quote from me on one of the reasons why infidelity among newlyweds is on the rise.
However, my quote addresses only one of the many reasons men and women cheat.
In addition to knowing the reasons why men and women cheat, it’s important for newlywed couples to be aware of the fact that newlyweds are not immune to infidelity.
According to the Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy, approximately60 % of men, and 50 % of women will have an extramarital affair at some point in their marriage.
Of course no newlywed couple ever expects infidelity to happen to them, but infidelity can happen to anyone at anytime. No one is immune. Even newly married couples are susceptible to infidelity. The new bride or groom who is unaware of this fact can be caught off guard, or taken totally by surprise when infidelity rears it’s ugly head.
Newlyweds need to know how to put the odds in their favor and decrease the likelihood that it will happen to them.
Infidelity Advice for Newlywed Couples
If you are a newlywed husband or wife, the best advice I can give you is this: educate yourself about infidelity. You need to be aware that men and women cheat on each other for entirely different reasons. You need to know what circumstances can trigger episodes of infidelity. You need to know what innocent situations or activities can lead to an affair. Above all, you need to know how to spot the REAL signs of infidelity. Most of them are subtle and easy to overlook.
Misconceptions about the following things can cost you your marriage:
- why men and women cheat on each other
- when and under what circumstances infidelity is most likely to occur
- how to recognize the warning signs that your spouse is on the verge of having an affair
Advice for Newlywed Husbands
Men especially, need to keep their fingers on the pulse of their marriage. Most cases of female infidelity are preventable, since female infidelity is usually linked to marital dissatisfaction. If your wife expresses dissatisfaction with you or the marriage, or expresses a need for emotional intimacy, don’t treat it lightly. The good news is that the issues that usually motivate women to cheat on their mates can easily be resolved by an attentive, caring and cooperative husband. Unfortunately, by the time most unsuspecting husbands discover their wives are having an affair, it’s too late to do anything about it.
Advice for Newlywed Wives
Wives should be aware that unlike female infidelity, male infidelity is rarely linked to marital dissatisfaction. Men and women cheat for different reasons. Women are usually surprised to learn that happy husbands cheat too, and that a good marriage is not a guarantee against infidelity. Three separate studies published in prestigious medical journals last year, all reported that even good marriages are susceptible to infidelity. So never assume that just because your husband is happy and your marriage is problem free, your husband will not cheat. Forewarned is forearmed. Familiarize yourself with the early warning signs of infidelity and the subtle signs of an impending or an ongoing affair. This way you can take positive action at the first sign of trouble. The future of your marriage could depend on your ability to spot the telltale signs in time.
Most Cheaters Never Get Caught
.
The sad reality is that most cheaters never get caught. Most victims of infidelity have no idea their spouse is having an affair because they fail to recognize the telltale signs.
One study found that 70% of married women and 54 % of married men did not know about their spouses' affair. In another study, 60% of the cheating spouses said their partner did not know about their affair.
Even undetected infidelity can take its toll on a marriage. So you and your spouse should both be familiar with the signs of infidelity. Early intervention can keep a budding affair from blossoming into a full blown romance. Early intervention can also prevent an affair in progress from reaching the point of no return. If your spouse is cheating -- or even thinking about cheating, you can’t afford to be the last to know.
Knowing What to Look for is the Key
If more husbands and wives knew how to spot the signs of infidelity, more marriages could be saved. But knowing what to look for is the key.
