A letter from a grandmother's files. An April to remember.
Guess I’m going to miss another birth this morning – but I’ll never get anything done sitting in front of the rabbit hutch. Yesterday afternoon Rose Marie – the third doe I’d bred to Buddy – began building her nest. She was working at it again before breakfast this morning and is now pulling out fur and arranging it in the nest so I’m sure the babies will be here before long. But I’ve decided that I’ll just go ahead with my work and if I miss the event, I just miss it. Besides, as Kyle says, we probably wouldn’t see much anyway. I’m so relieved to know that Buddy will be usable as a buck. You know, sometimes you get hold of a buck that never is any good. Also – yesterday I was successful in breeding two of those does that have been so stubborn. Happy says that it is because we’ve had more fresh green feed for them lately – and maybe I’ll even be able to breed those two registered does. Of course, it had to be the very best does that wouldn’t breed.
We surely did have a good dinner last night. Mustard greens from the garden, hardboiled eggs and wilted lettuce salad. It’s the first time we’ve eaten any of our lettuce. Happy complained mightily about it being too sour – but I noticed that he spooned up what was left in his plate. There’s enough greens in the garden right now for me to can a couple of pints and I may do that today – altho there are things I like better than canned greens. Wish our locker was handier – they’re grand quick frozen. I failed to give you all our menu for last night and just so you won’t think it was a skimpy meal I’ll add that we had macaroni and cheese, corn bread and canned fruit for dessert.
I cut out a dress yesterday instead of cleaning the house. One of these days I’ll really get a strong urge to clean house and that’ll be the day I do it. Of course, I straighten and dust and sweep all along – it’s the general cleaning of wood work, walls and floors that I’m talking about putting off.
Well for goodness sake. I’ve been sitting here five minutes and I haven’t yet thought of anything else to say. So – altho this is mighty short to spend three cents on, guess I’ll just hush until tomorrow when I’ll probably be in a chattier frame of mind. I think I just keep wondering how Rose Marie is doing. I know Buddy is full blooded New Zealand White and I think she is too – and if so we ought to have some might nice rabbits there. It’s her first litter – and his too, come to think of it that way.
I haven’t said anything about Daddy making the trip you mentioned. Gosh, I can’t think of anything I’d like better than to have him out here for a visit – and I’ll bet he’d enjoy it too. But – I’ll bet anything in the world you couldn’t run him off on such a trip with a shot gun – not unless you could go with him. But if you do talk him into doing it I’ll give you credit for being a better persuader than I think you are. And I think you’d have to work out a better idea than just having Bill spend the nights with you.
