Is Failure a Prerequisite to Success?

Can we succeed without failing first?

Most people are not aware of the fact that our failures are the building blocks of our successes and setbacks are apprenticeships to a better performance.

How could our failures be that important to our success, one may wonder? Neurologically speaking though, no baby ever stood up and started to walk normally from first attempt, right? When it’s time to walk, a baby normally stands up, hesitantly takes his/her first step, fall, then stands up and repeat the cycle over and over again until they master the skill of walking. Every time they do so, their brain cells consolidate more and more to form a powerful network in their brain for that specific function. Anything we want to master must follow the same process!

You see, none of us rode a bike, drove a car, used a keyboard, performed a surgery, or acrobats perfectly well as we took the first shot at it. Why? Simply because it is just the way our brains work! That is to say, whatever we want to achieve and master in life, we have to go through the same sequence of taking action first, initially fail, try again, improve, try again, and succeed. There is no magic pill to this and no other way around it!

Unfortunately, some people attempt to circumvent this process of trial & error either by trying to go straight to success, go around it, or by not doing it at all. Those are the ones that want all the lights to turn green before they proceed, they’re indecisive, and remain taxiing on the tarmac of life because they are afraid to fly!

John Templeton once said, “Life will get better when you play it by the rules. A fundamental rule that will further contribute to your success is the following: If you are not willing to fail, you are not willing to succeed.

From this perspective, I can easily say “Yes” failure is a prerequisite to success!
