Here's a car trip that James Bond wouldn't have the time for. But If you do, your Bond girl will never forget it. She'll be catching her breath for months.
Fly to Nassau in the Bahamas, off the coast of Florida, where they filmed Thunderball and Casino Royale. Stay at the Atlantis Hotel. Arrange to go to Blue Lagoon Island, just a 20 minute boat ride away, to swim with the dolphins.http://www.dolphinencounters.com/
Next, fly to Orlando for a few days at DisneyWorld. Stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Get a room on the animal view side.
Then take Amtrak train from there, overnight to Philadelphia.
From the Philadelphia train station, rent a car (with a Navigational system) and drive to Atlantic City to see the Boardwalk, the Atlantic Ocean, and gamble a little. It's up to you if you stay overnight or just look around for half a day.
Then drive 2 hr. 20 min. to Lancaster County in Pennsylvania to see the Amish locations via a tour that leaves the Visitor Center.
Next drive southwest passing through the Gettysburg civil war battle field and monuments. Drive through Tennessee, ending up in Memphis. Stay at Heartbreak Hotel. It's small but fun and convenient. Tour Elvis' Graceland.
Next, head to Albuquerque and stay at the Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town Shop and eat at old town. Don't miss the Rattlesnake Museum. Small, creepy, but an experience. www.rattlesnakes.com And visit the Bead and Fetish shop to let her make her own necklace and buy an Indian Power Animal ‘Fetish’.
Then it's up to Monument Valley where the only place to stay is
Gouldings Lodge. http://www.gouldings.com/
Drive to the visitor's center where you can hire a Native American to take you by jeep to see the sights. But you might prefer to use your own car and enjoy the sights with more freedom. Beware the bumpy road. Drive slow.
Next drive down to the Grand Canyon and stay at one of the rim hotels as mentioned before. Then down to Flagstaff and back track 30 miles to see the Meteor Crater. Yes, it's just a big whole, but it also has an interesting museum and there's a Subway sandwich shop there for a quick bite.
Next up is Las Vegas. Plan that to your style
From Vegas it’s four hour drive to Disneyland and the Los Angeles attractions.
For Disneyland, stay at the Disney Pier Hotel. It's a smaller hotel than the others on the Disney lot for a quieter stay. Visit Disney's two parks & drive 10 min. to Knott's Berry Farm.
Then stay a night or two at the Universal Hilton and visit the studio attractions. Don't miss the tram tour with the new surround 3D experience of King Kong’s Island and Transformers ride.
After surviving the Jurassic Park dinosaurs, drive north toward San Francisco, stopping at the small Scandinavian town of Solvang for some quick eating and shopping
Next stop is Monterey where you can sleep at the Portola Hotel & Spa near Fisherman's Wharf and go whale watching the next morning.
Just 15 minutes from there is Carmel. Park and walk down Ocean Ave to see the shops and end up at the beach.
An optional side trip will take you to the beautiful Yosemite National Park. http://www.yosemitepark.com/
Then on to Santa Cruz to ride the Giant Dipper at the Beach Boardwalk. Find the Bazookas that shoots tennis balls at targets and blast a few.
From there it's 90 minutes to San Francisco. Stay at the Fisherman's Wharf Hilton for a few days.
Don't miss the 45 minute bay cruise, the Cliff House, and Chinatown. The "motorized cable car" tours near the pier have great 90 minute and 3 hour tours.
After that, turn in your rental car at the SF Airport and fly home, knowing you surpassed any trip James Bond has ever been on. .... though he might argue the point.
