It’s In His Name
Many times when we are seeking and searching for something new in our walk with the Lord, He has a way that we know not of to give us that which is simple but opens up our eyes to something that is great. Even those things that we may think that we are confident in can be opened to new revelation, which is designed in love to bring one into a more intimate relationship with Him.
During a recent Bible study, my Pastor gave a simple homework assignment to read and write the Lord’s Prayer at least three times a day until the next class. I must confess that I did not meet the minimum req1uirements of the assignment. A relatively simple assignment that was fought by the enemy by being too busy set in the arena of time, hindering at every attempt. I ended up writing the prayer once and reading it every day. Within a few days the Lord’s Prayer became incorporated into my prayers. This prayer that was a basic learned during childhood, had not been a part of the daily conversation for a long time. At one point, I could not get past “hallowed be thy name.” Something unusual happened. The flood of His many names came into my thoughts and prayers.
The flood of names were the one that I already knew: Jehovah Nissi, The Lord My Banner, Jehovah Jireh, The Lord My Provider, Jehovah Shammah, The Lord Is Here, and Jehovah Rohi, The Lord My Shepherd. As I continued in prayer and speaking those names, even more came out that I did not frequently use; Jehovah Goel, The Lord My Redeemer, Jehovah Kanna, The Lord Whose Name Is Jealous, Jehovah Gibbor, The Mighty God and Jehovah Saboath, The Lord of Hosts. To be hones I got caught in praying His names. As I continued to pray and meditate on His names that I spoke, I realized that He want me to know Him intimately in many different ways. We may think that we know Him intimately, but are places in Him that we have not even had a glimpse of.
In Exodus 6: 1-3, the Lord introduces Himself to Israel as Jehovah. “And God spake unto Moses and said unto him, I am the Lord. And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah, was I not know to them.” (Exodus 6: 2-3). God had made His covenant with the patriarchs with the name of God Almighty, El Shaddai, of power and might. But now He wanted His people to know Him the manifestations of actions. He was revealing Himself in a new and unique way.
Continuing to mediate on the names that I knew, led me to search for more of His names that I did not know. It is amazing how one thought can stir up the hunger for more of the Lord. The many different names give some insight into His personality, but it is the hunger that will cause one to desire to know Him even the more. For instance, Jehovah Kanna, The Lord Whose Name Is Jealous, we know that we are to put no one and nothing before Him, but in many instances we do. Do you even wonder how is He jealous over you? His eyes are always upon you, watching and knowing everything about you. I am even wondering is it possible for me to be jealous of Him.
Thinking on His jealousy, I remembered that He sealed us. “ In whom ye also trusted after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.” (Ephesians 1:13). The seal is evidence of His ownership as well as His protection. The word ownership leads me to Jehovah Goel, The Lord My Redeemer. Because of the cost of my redemption, the purchase of my life from darkness, the security deposit and down payment of His Spirit to preserve and keep me unto that day, He has every right to be jealous. In case some of us may have missed it, Jesus is jealous of His Bride, the Body of Christ.
A few years ago, I found Jehovah Saboath in James 5:4. “Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped sown your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Saboath.” I still cry out to the Lord to avenge me speedily against my adversary for those things that He ordained for me that have been held up, misdirected from the correct time and season by fraud or sabotage by the enemy. The harvest that was released is crying out to be in my hands for the work of the kingdom.
Constantly seeking, the cry continuously, He revealed another aspect of His character, Jehovah Gmolah, The Lord of Recompense. “Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite. (Jeremiah 51:56). The word recompense is to compensate or make restitution for damages or injury. Requite is to make retaliation on or to avenge for a wrong.
The word says, “Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near.” (Isaiah 55:6). As I was writing this article I began to realize that the particular name that was revealed to me was the part of His attribute that was near and He wanted me to experience Him beyond what I already knew. The beauty of all this is that no mater what happens, we will still call upon the basic name that is above all names, Jesus.
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phillipians 2:9-11)
