Here's how I survived a kind of pirate attack in the Andaman Sea near Phuket.
I was directing a travel film in Phuket, Thailand. We took a boat out with a Thai guide and four Thai actresses, cruising the Andaman Sea to get some shots.
We docked our boat on a tiny football field size island to film a cave that was there. We could feel the hostility when we entered the giant cave with a dozen Thai men sitting inside. They looked like pirates in a badly cast movie, character actors too much in character to be believed.
We immediately turned to leave, but one pirate blocked the gang way to our boat, while four other pirates demanded money before anyone could leave.
Our guide negotiated the landing fee with him. We gave them a couple of hundred dollars, and quickly cruised away from the Pirates of the Andaman. I hate to imagine what would have happened had we not had a Thai guide and Thai actresses with us.
