Is America still great? An article delving into the idea that Americans are more happy ignoring what we fear.
What has happened to us? Are we all so blind and complacent in life that we don't want to think about the things that don't bring us happiness? We are a great and mixed culture of people that have struggled to make a place in this country, but have we forgotten that there are others out there who are envious of what we have accomplished and will do whatever it takes to bring us down.
Recent events will forever change the way we see our culture, or will it? We are already starting to go back to the way things were before the attacks of September 11th. We have gotten back to our comfortable way of life. What is it going to take for us to completely see how fragile our society really is and take measures to ensure that it doesn’t collapse?
We can increase security in airports. That is a great idea, until 5 to 10 years from now, when all has been peaceful and security reverts back to the relaxed state that it was in before 9/11. We can screen people coming into the country better. This also is a great idea, but what is to stop people from forging documents or paying people enough money to forge them for them. Terrorists are usually backed by sponsors who will pay the money that is needed to get the job done. Also, what about all the people that enter the country illegally each and every day? The government says that they have a handle on it and the rate of illegal aliens has dropped, but how do they know for sure?
Terrorism has been going on since man first evolved. There is terrorism in the Bible, as well as in history. Other nations have been under terrorist attacks for hundreds of years. We thought we were invulnerable. We were proven wrong. Our ignorance and naivety led to a horrible act. Why then, are we slipping back to our daily grind of ignoring what is going on around us? Is it because it is more comfortable to ignore what we fear?
It is not reasonable to think that this won’t happen again. Deep inside we know that it is not the end of terrorist attacks against our great nation. But we find happiness in suppressing the thought that it will happen. There will never be an end to terror. It is a state of emotion that lives in us all of our lives. It is a state of act that will be forever ready to take advantage of weakness or neglect. Lets keep up hope that we can prevent it in the future, but be realistic and prepare for the fact that it is not the end.

| Great point. We are getting back to the comfortable way of life. If this can happen two times, why not again? But, I dont think we should live our lives in fear wondering if this is going to happen again either. What is the answer? I dont know, I guess we just have to trust the men and woman who are set out to protect our country. |
