WWII AUTHOR ONE STEP CLOSER TO PUBLISHING HER MEMOIRS -- FINDING AN EDITOR
2/5/2010 11:54:50 AM
How important is the editing of your book?
Based on research alone, we all know it's critical to get your book edited before publication. Noting like a few good speling and gramatical erors to quickly kill you're repatation and your blook. : )
At this point I'm no good to Mom. I've been typing up her memoirs from her scrap sheets of paper so long now that I'm starting to miss things. Just the other day, I realized I used the wrong word: "week" for "weak" even though I know the difference between the two!
“What a Good Editor Can Do For You” (http://www.spawn.org/editing/goodeditor.htm), by Patricia L. Fry, lists many other reasons we need to find a good editor. This, however, can be a daunting task when you don’t know where to begin. Thank goodness for the Internet, where you can investigate just about anything!
Starting with a basic Google search, we've looked at some big editing companies in New York, and a few small ones located across the country. Then we focused on the local area. I thought local editors would be a little more difficult to find, but to my surprise there are quite a few in the area. Here are some other good places we found in our research:
1. Book Editing Associates: http://www.book-editing.com/
About: “Book Editing Associates is a network of professional writers and editors. They are chosen and retained in the network through a rigorous process of screening, testing, and monitoring. The freelance editors and writers who apply to join must have over five years of experience and a track record of editing traditionally published books (as opposed to vanity or self-publishing). Applicants take several editing and writing tests. In this network, editors may offer only the services in which they excel. Only 2% pass the proofreading test, and they alone may offer that service through the network.”
2. LinkedIn: http://www.LinkedIn.com
About: "Over 55 million professionals use LinkedIn to exchange information, ideas and opportunities."
3. Preditors & Editors: http://anotherealm.com/prededitors/peesla.htm
About: "A guide to publishers and writing services for serious writers." The link takes you to P&E’s recommended list of editors.
That said, Mom is more comfortable with leveraging the expertise of local editors we can look in the eye. She will be interviewing her first editor on February 15th at a nearby Barnes & Noble Starbucks.
