I want to try an experimental novel 11/2/2008 9:40:47 PM The basic premise: Internet censorship and freedom of speech Recently our Australia government decided that it would be a good thing to protect us from ourselves by blocking tens of thousands of webpages on the grounds that the government knows best. (Well that's the way I see it anyway). Notwithstanding the fact that it's impossible to do because you can use a proxy anytime for free, it led me to thinking about a new novel. The Internet is a web of extreme complexity, but when I begin a new story I always begin with the idea "What if?"
What if a government, whether it be China, Britain, Australia, USA or whatever, decided that they were going to pretty much dictate to you what you can browse, and at the same time gather incredible amounts of data about you. Oh of course this will include your sex life and bank details. (Both vitally important to you.) Well? What WOULD you do?
What I would do is join a bunch of other people and begin to use wireless and satellite to create an "alternative" internet...an internet which is free, open, and CANNOT be closed down by any outside forces. So, here is what I want to do. Firstly I want YOU to go to www.zoho.com where I share my writing with others. Check it out. It's an online office suite and it's free to use but the really neat thing about it is that you can write online WITH others in real time! It means that we can edit and contribute to a growing novel simply by logging onto the group.
I want to write a novel about a NEW INTERNET an ALTERNATIVE INTERNET. How will it work? The "nasties" will emigrate of course and that will give this alternative a bad name. I want to find a bunch of people who would like to take a chance and write this novel online all together. I will begin it, and anyone who wants to can continue from where I left off.
I really like the idea of a bunch of people writing together in a big group as a single entity. Using zoho as the word processor we can do this even if there are 30 or 40 people. If anyone wants to join in on this, just send me a message and if I can get ten people who would like to write with me on this one, we'll begin. Once I have ten people I will put up the first chapter of about 1500 words or more, and will then share it with the other writers to be able to log in and continue to write. We can work on the details a bit later but anyone want to join in? Could be fun!
