Tears of Joy

Returning home after a deployment is a joyful event, however it's emotional because images of past and future lingers.
It isn't a secret when a Marine returns after deployment. For most, the focus is on the family waiting and enduring the absence, for others it's fear of change. One thing hardly told is the emotion he/she experience on the return flight.
I remember returning from a deployment with anxiety to get home. The feeling of surviving was a blessing and being able to see my kids again gave me goose bumps. I was returning to little loving arms which I missed dearly. I lingered in thought back to those long nights of not being able to tuck them into bed, remembered those days of reading and creating stories for them, and times I laughed at the silly things they did. All were on my mind during the long flight from the Middle East. What else goes through a Marine's mind while flying home? Well, it's recalling letters, long chats, and not so comforting conversations from your other half. It's reflecting how things were before you left and comparing to an unkonwn future.
It wasn't pleasant during my battle time. Not only did I lose my friends, battle companions, or wonderful Marines to the war. But, ungretfully I lost a wife. The conversations the wife and I shared were nothing near soothing for either situation. Letters and chats were empty of emotions, and I knew returning with a chance was slim and changing her mind was inevitable. Not only did my mate fear my return, but my thought of change after surviving was an emotion we shared. And unfortunately, it was the only thing we shared. So back to the positive thought of that long flight. It was those sparkling eyes I remembered and the laughter I heard, and pictures of three lovely little girls.
The plane landed, we disembarked, and as I walked across the flight deck, three voices I recognized shouted, "Daddy" and tears of joy finally rolled.
