Action/Adventure . . . Romance? 10/12/2006 7:22:33 AM Why is it that the Action/Adventure genre can have Romance but NOT BE a Romance? As I ponder the reason for my latest rejection slip (something all of us have a collection of, right? I've heard that Stephen King, world's most widely read author collected almost 90 of them before he sold 'Carrie') I'm thinking it was because I had too much Action/Adventure along with the Romance, therefore, it was NOT a romance.
What is a romance? Is it just a school teacher hunk who moves into the heroine's school district? The pipe-smoking, handsome, brooding intellectual that moves in next door? The well-muscled hunk that stops to help a stranded motorist?
Why can't the hero be a firefighter, soldier, spy or some other action type job? And why can't that job become the plot as well as the romance?
Consider the latest blockbuster movie, "The Pirates of the Caribbean". Action/Adventure? You bet! Romance? I say, YES! Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly willing to face the gallows for their love (What red-blooded man wouldn't?). In fact, the whole plot is about rescuing her from the pirates. Will she fall for Cap'n Jack or remain true to Orlando? A romance plot if ever there was one. And, I know that a plethora of women love this movie. You know the guys do, too.
So, why not a new genre? Action/Adventure/Romance?
Your thoughts?
