As an ex convict I wish to make something perfectly clear - which is that I was quite rightly imprisoned for the crimes I committed against society! However having said this, based on experience, I know darn well that the so-called penal system of criminal reform does not work. The huge number of offenders who re-offend, and get sent back to prison demonstrates this.
I suspect that most people have all sorts of misconceived ideas of how prisoners should be treated while serving out their sentences. Well just for the record, while in prison I have been the recipient of treatment that has consisted of brutality both physically and mentally, and surprisingly enough, kindness from the prison staff.
Prison is not the cozy cosseted world that some people seem to think it is. It is a dangerous unpredictable world where you cannot afford to relax for a moment. yet ex-offenders like myself, commit further offences after release, which result in further terms of imprisonment.
As I see it, the way to reform criminals is to get inside their heads by giving them an awareness of a social consciousness. I think a case of point could be myself. After I left the army I got involved in crime. The police stated I was one of the top rated burglars in Britain who had been targeting high profile members of the establishment. The Judge for his part, described me as a connoisseur of antiques and a highly intelligent man. Which bids the question, if I were that smart, how come I had been caught?
It is no figment of the imagination when I tell you that my exploits aroused the interest of a famous author, whom wrote a best seller; followed on by other books and a Television series about me. We subsequently became good friends and it was he that suggested, that because of my background I should write crime novels, which resulted in the three books published by Amazon and Kindle. One book "For the Love of a Brother" went onto the bestseller list of Amazon.
However I am faced with a dilemma in which I use a pseudonym for my books because I regret what I have done in the past. In fact, I sometimes inwardly cringe when I am in company with people who are talking about criminals, and who are not aware of my criminal past.
The social consciousness that I write about, in my case, came about because of my love for a decent woman.
I have been incarcerated in prison with some of the most evil and dangerous people imaginable. They are in a minority, in contrast to the vast majority of inmates who are frequently ordinary family men who have for various reasons ended up in prison.
Imprisonment sometimes ends in divorce, and a break up of a relationship. Then a vicious circle develops with the result that on their release the men return to crime because of their association with other criminals who have become their friends
