Friendship Is A Gift

As we get older, we get entrenched in the same old ways. Our paths become worn down and turn into ruts, which some refer to as graves with the ends kicked out. The wonderment of youth and the passion that comes with experiencing things for the first time gets swallowed up in boredom and listlessness in the everyday routines of life. People we meet become faces instead of souls. They serve purposes in our lives, and we come to know them as the mailman, the plumber, the preacher, or the clerk, instead of Frank, Jeb, Eddie, or Nancy. We end up with a few friends that frustrate us, co-workers who compete with us, and nameless people who serve us. This world forces us to stereotype, pigeon-hole, and marginalize people. The Kingdom of God exist for one reason: People! God so loved the people of this world that He gave His only Son to save them. He became a person, so we could become like Him. Jesus once said that you would know His disciples because of the love they have for one another: for people. In a moment of prayer once, meditating upon "love," I heard in my heart a statement that shook me to my core. "You love God only as much as you love the person you love least in this world." There are a lot of people who rub me the wrong way. And many I don't even know. I found that statement hard to stomach, but I've never forgotten it. It's made me dig deeper and deeper into the concept of Godly love. Today, it's enough to remember that the people we run across every day are souls, not just nameless faces. God loves them so much. Who knows, perhaps if you take the time to show interest in someone sitting on the pew opposite you one morning, you will make a new friend. Friendships are a gift from God: A treasure to be much desired. Kindness to the stranger checking you out at Walmart could brighten someone's day. You could actually be an instrument in the hand of God and make a brand new friend in the process! Wouldn't be too bad a day, would it?
