October in Sydney Australia
Hard to believe it but it's spring in Sydney and the weather is worse than it was in winter in some ways. This is a long weekend for us, meaning that Monday is a public holiday. Many Australians live for their long weekends and use them as an escape from the cities to other activities such as camping, fishing, boating or just touring in the country away from the ratrace of city life.
This weekend is cold, windy and wet. The rain isn't constant, but it's there and you can feel the dampness in the cold air. Last weekend the wind howled, blowing off snow in the Blue Mountains, so the chill factor was brrrrrrrrrr. I live about 12 kms from the foot of the Blue Mountains so it didn't have far to blow for that cold wind to catch up with us here. We had a huge wind storm the previous week which saw our city and us, disappear into a haze of red dust. The dirt blew across from the centre of our country and covered everything. Our cars looked like we had all been out into the wilderness for a trip. The dust made its way into our houses, covering everything. Floor tiles became skid areas as shoes slipped on the settled dirt. Just amazing. Most of us have never seen anything like it except when the city was surrounded by bush fires and that same orange glow was all we could see through the haze of smoke.
I woke up thinking that the outside light on the house had come on because of the wind blowing the trees around. I looked out the window and was amazed to see that I was in a world full of orange light. By the time I made it outside to my car to go to work I was confronted by a filthy dirty vehicle that I had to hoze down so that I could see out the windows. I drove around the corner and the car was covered again. Driving was hazardous in the high wind and the haze. Amazing what nature can do. It was like living on Mars, or what I envisage that would be.
This weekend, that so many have planned for over a few months, is going to be cold, windy and wet. Such a shame for so many with plans of going away for a break, or even just going to the beach. It makes little difference to me as I'm at home minding the house and the little ones (our pets) as my son has gone to Orange, central west NSW, for the weekend. I probably would have travelled south to spend the weekend with my other son, but it would be miserable on the south coast too. Home is a good option actually as I can warm up, cool down, sleep in my own bed and do whatever I please for a few days.
It's hard to believe that 2009 has almost slipped away into the past. Christmas isn't all that far away and with it, for us in Sydney, comes the promise of a long hot summer. Not my choice for the time of year, but you have to take the good with the bad, and many Aussies love our summers in spite of the heat and humidity.
My son, the one in Orange this weekend, is off overseas again in a few weeks. This time he is going to New York and Washington. He is looking forward to another trip to the US, something I've been and done and really don't want to do again. We are so far away from everywhere except New Zealand and Asia. Asia I've been and done and don't wish to do again either. New Zealand is a goal. Maybe one day! Ireland is a must to revisit, and yet again, it's so far away and flying isn't my favourite way to travel either. Hard to please? Perhaps, or maybe just preferring to have my feet closer to the ground!
