Getting back into the adventure 5/6/2006 12:35:14 AM For people who don't write every day (like I do), taking a break from writing can sometimes cause a problem when the writer tries to start back up. That's never been a problem for me. So far this month I've written about 9,000 words and completed three new short stories -- two of which I even like. The first one was my 'getting back into it' story. I hadn't been writing short stories for a while, and when our yearly short story dare came up on Forward Motion, I found that I had a hard time getting going. It took me four days to write the first one, although part of that delay was some work for Vision that needed to be done. The next two stories took only a day to write. I have the prompt for the third one and some ideas already playing in my head.
It's good to be back to the short story writing. Novels are wonderful, but they do take a long time. It's a wonderful feeling to write a complete story in a couple sittings.
I know that some people just cannot write short stories. I was one of those people for about twenty years. Then, one day, they clicked. I can't even tell you why, except that I had been doing some writing exercises for a while that included writing what I thought would be a good opening line every day. I later expanded that into the first 100 words, and after I had done that for a while, I suddenly found myself filling out the material a little more... and suddenly I was writing short stories. And selling them.
I've been lucky in that way. No, I'm not a big name writer -- but I've done well enough and I continue to enjoy it. I know far too many writers for whom it has become a job. For me, it's still an adventure.
