My day as a sales lady
9 .30 in the morning with a list of booksellers on one side and the telephone on the other I start my day
“Good morning, my name is Carole Holt I wonder if I could interest you in a few leaflets of my latest novel ‘The House of Stones?”
“Who do you say you are?” said a real old Dorset gentleman.
“Carole Holt”
“Never heard of you! What do you want?”
“I just wanted to know if you were interested in taking a few leaflets of my novel for your shop counter.”
“Oh I see, well I don’t know, I will have to think about that,” he said in a puzzled voice.
“Shall I ring you back later,” I said wondering if it was worth it.
“Well you can if you like, all right then good bye”
2nd
“Oh good morning, my name is Carole Holt I wonder …”
“Yes sure send as many as you like bye.”
3rd
“Oh good morning, my name is …”
“Well hello there that is a pretty name, you must come round to my bookshop and tell me all about yourself and your book, I am all on my own here.” He breathed heavily down the phone.
“I’ll send you some leaflet,” I said quickly and put the phone down.
4th
“Oh good morning …”
“This is a Japanese bookshop,” the young lady giggled, “is your book in Japanese if so we may be able to take it.”
“No very sorry only English at the moment.”
5th
“Oh good morning …”
“We are a Christian bookshop,” said the lady in a very abrupt manner and put down the phone.
Number 27 and feeling a little weary and ready for a cup of coffee
“Oh good morning…”
“Sorry head office makes all the decisions bye.”
By 2 o’clock I was ready to go shopping, clean the house from top to bottom, do anything rather than pick up the phone and say ‘Hello my name is…’.
