The International Issue of Poesy Magazine 11/16/2006 4:43:28 PM COINCIDENTALLY, THE 33RD ISSUE OF POESY Magazine is an exclusive international poets and photographers issue raining out of the same month as the fifth anniversary of 9-11. This was not an intentional P.C. motive, but I wouldn’t call it convenient fate either. I probably subconsciously knew what I was doing all along, but distanced myself from the thought in order to keep a solid focus on the search for creativity without the distraction of the cause. The universal idea of this light journey onto foreign soil justifies the cause.
My true inspiration for an international issue came on the break of my 100th international submission back in April. I am exhausted with rejecting so many first-rate international writers. The goal of POESY Magazine has always been to drive awareness of innovative and exciting American poetry into our society, but we also need to take a deep breath away from all of the domestic bliss and perceive with a new pair of eyes. We need to take it all in and arrest the moments given to us by poets influenced by diverse backgrounds and upbringings. The more we can relate to the unknown, the more passionate our writing will become.
Jack Hirschman illustrates the basis of our issue quite well in our interview. I chose Jack to represent the American poet because he is the only poet I know today with undying infatuation to follow the word out into the unknown where it burns with furious truth no matter where it may steer him.
Glenn Cooper is from Australia and notes how good we have it here in America. I hear poets fretting over the state of poetry and the small press today, but try living in Australia where the small press is almost non-existent. If you want to read your poetry anywhere, well, you can forget about that too!
Here is just a sweet little taste of the poetry and art outside our confined borders...
