Let Us Eat Cake!
1/13/2007 8:19:44 PM
As part of our 18-month journey in planning the wedding of my daughter's dreams, we went to a cake tasting today. When I got married 27 years ago, buying the cake wasn't a big deal. My future mil and my mom took me to a bakery, my mom told the bakery what I (she) wanted. I insisted on using the blue candle doves I had bought for a cake topper instead of the standard couple on top of the cake. And that was it.

But now things have changed. Today was the first of three tastings my daughter has set up. She and I went, accompanied by her fiance and my other daughter. The woman at the bakery had everything all ready for us, litle pieces of cake laid out on a platter with spoonfuls of frostings. While we scarfed cake, she showed us pictures and we looked at the beautiful cakes on display.

This is actually the most fun we've had so far in planning this wedding. First we had about two dreary months of finding the perfect wedding site. Then we had two months of finding the perfect wedding photographer. We had about six months of finding the perfect bridal gown and another three months of finding the perfect bridesmaid gowns. Then we had to find the perfect violinist and the perfect officiant. Flowers? Yep, we've got the perfect silk flowers too. My spare bedroom is filled with the perfect centerpieces and the perfect bottles of wine. This darned well better be a perfect wedding!

Finally, today we got to the fun part- tasting cakes. And we have two more cake tasting appointments to go. Personally, I thought the cakes today were pretty good, and I'd be happy enough to go with one of them. But, on the other hand, going to a bakery and tasting cake is a heck of a lot more fun than traipsing through various wedding locations, or looking at hundreds of wedding gowns. So hey, I think we'd better check out those other bakeries just to make sure we have the perfect wedding cake to go with our perfect everything else!
