What's Next in Publishing for Readers & Writers?

With POD and self publishing being so convenient, the face of publishing is changing and traditional publishers are going to have to change with it. Are print books dying?
Associated Content held an Ultimate Call for Content Contest where everyone who enters submits one 500-word article on a topic of their choice, that had a few other specifications, and then the winner is going to get a $5000 prize.
I thought long and hard on a topic, and I wanted one I just KNEW would be a winner, but you what really kept calling to me was an issue near and dear to my heart: the changing of the publishing industry - how PODs are affecting publishing in general - bad or good - self publishing versus traditional publishing and the like.
That's what brought me to write my entry:

I feel pretty strongly about it as a writer - and if you're a writer hoping to publish a book, have published a book - trade or self published - you should care too!
