Doing different from what we believe is contradiction in terms.
11/13/2006 10:03:29 AM
Doing different from what we believe is contradiction in terms. Let us say for instance, my belief teaches me to speak the truth. That belief binds me to speak the truth under all situations. Otherwise, it ceases to be my belief. If I speak the truth only when it serves my interests, and lie when it doesn't, then my belief is to speak the truth when it serves my interests.
Unfortunately, this fundamental value of speaking the truth, common to most of the world's faiths, is one value that is not followed. The problem comes when it becomes a social norm. If everyone lies thinking it is the norm, it penetrates the psyche of the entire society. This makes us insensitive to the norm and we become complacenct to the prevailing tradition. It may seem like it is too late to reverse the situation.
Fortunately, we all have a soul that corresponds only with truth and propels us to look inward, every now and then, and restore us to our beliefs. While the state of power and motivation for greed may still keep some of us from speaking the truth, telling lies will sooner or later haunt us if we really believe. Moreover, we suffocate our souls every time we lie and degrade us to less than human beings.
Doing different from what we believe will affect us in many ways. First, it makes us a sinner. Second, we cease to be followers or ambassadors of our faiths because we degrade our faiths in the eyes of the world. Third, we cease to be recipient of any redeeming value our faith may have to offer. Fourth, it dissuades people of other faiths to have any regard for our faith offering any redeeming value.
Speaking truth is only one value I picked up for illustration. The above statements are equally applicable for all human values that have their basis in our beliefs.
