Watch Illustrator LIVE Step-By-Step New Post Every Day! 3/11/2007 2:51:36 PM Many people have been interested in seeing how I create illustrations for their books.... Go to my Latest News section and I'll post my progress on one illustration each day. This is a fun way for me to show you all - first hand - and in real time! Below I have some quick Q&A that's often asked of me... Q- "How long does it take you to make an illustration?"
A- "Time can vary... but I paint pretty fast. The first book I created, "Hurray for Rhyme it's Story Time" took 12 days to illustrate. I created one new illustration a day for 12 days. But this went fast because I did not have to stop and ask my client if they approved each step - I was the author!"
Q- "What kind of paint and materials to you use?"
A- "I paint with acrylic paint on canvas. Acrylic dries fast so it's convenient. The size of canvas depends on each situation. My canvases for Hurray for Rhyme were very large, 30"x40". The illustrations for the Believe and Dream Series were 11"x14".
Q- "Are you still accepting new clients?"
A- "Although I don't have as much time as I used to I still consider new clients. First I need to be able to read their stories to see if it's something I can be inspired with. I also like to read their marketing/advertising plan and budget for illustrations."
Q- "How many illustrations are in a children's book?"
A- "I've been told the average page count for a children's book is 32. Personally I find this to be too many. The books that seem to be favorites among the kids that I read to are books between 20 - 24 pages.
Q- "What costs are involved with the illustrations besides the illustrators fee?"
A- "After the illustrations are completed they must be scanned by a professional reprographics company. It costs an average of a thousand dollars to scan illustrations for a 25 - 30 page book. The images must be scanned at a very high resolution for them to look clear. They must also be scanned to get a rich, vibrant color. Avoid using digital images that are taken with a camera. Your images will look washed out and pastel (instead of bright)."
Q- "Do you also teach art?"
A- "Yes. I am currently teaching art classes at the Hampden Dubose Academy and Legacy High School in Zellwood. Florida. This year my 9th and 10th grade classes complete their first published children's book, "Finding Jesus"."
Q- "Do you have any formal education?"
A- "Yes. I graduated with a fine arts degree fromt the University of South Florida, Tampa."
