Books by Gene K. Garrison

Gene K. Garrison discusses two of her books here, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT CAVE CREEK (It's The People), and WIDOWHOOD HAPPENS. They are not Westerns in the usual sense. The first is more about lifestyles in an old Western town. The other is a book about preparing for widowhood.
The category says "Western," but my books are not shoot-em-up fiction. They are pleasant reads about real people I interviewed back in the 1970s in the small town of Cave Creek, Arizona. There were the owners of the historic bar called Harold's Cave Creek Corral; a sometime-artist-sometime prospector who would exchange his paintings for drinks; a tough gun-toting, sharp-shooting woman sheriff, and a gentle musician who accepted the law-enforcement job because nobody else wanted it. It was in the days when rowdy drunks would be chained to a tree overnight because taking them to the Phoenix jail took too long. It was about 30 miles away. That book is titled "There's Something About Cave Creek (It's The People)."

A completely different type of book was next. "Widowhood Happens" is about encouraging married people to prepare for widowhood. It was a learning experience for me too. Twelve women and two men who had been widowed told me their very frank stories — all different due to varying circumstances and personalities. The only advice I included of my own was for friends and relatives of the bereaved: LISTEN and DON'T JUGDE. For professional advice I interviewed the experts who deal with those problems. For practical information I interviewed an attorney who was not dull at all. Then a psychologist, social group organizer, head of an organization that gets women who have been out of the work force for many years back into a job. There was a tremendous therapy group that held week-end healing retreats. I even asked married friends what they had done to prepare for widowhood. The answers both surprised and amused me.

Read about my books on this site, the on-line bookstores,
and amazon.com/kindle. Your favorite bookstore can also order them for you.
