Love or Money. What’s the Safer Bet?
9/16/2007 5:20:17 AM
Recently a work colleague was flaunting her new status to anyone who would notice.

“My BOYFRIEND wanted to….”
“I’ll need to ask my BOYFRIEND about the…”

I may have been the only one to notice her nuances. But she was making her position clear. She was EXCITED about her current situation. And I was excited for her.

For this colleague of mine had been without said boyfriend for longer than I could remember.

She had spent the last ten-plus years concentrating on her career, and had particularly in recent times, been pining for that elusive significant other.

So it was really great that things appeared to be going well.

Until….my colleague announced she was leaving our organization to take on a new job that would mean she was out of state more often than not.

So what, you may ask? You have to do what you have to do, right? I mean it’s your career. The dream role you’ve always strived for. You’d be mad not to take an opportunity that falls at your feet wouldn’t you?

That is the million dollar question.

What’s the safer bet? The new man in your life or the dream job? Which would you be prepared to lose? Or can you have both?

Would you risk missing out on a great job for a fledgling relationship?

Was my colleague crazy or savvy? Maybe she was happy to love long distance. Maybe she’d decided this guy wasn’t ‘the one’. Maybe she’d just built her first relationship roadblock.

There’s no black and white answer. No right or wrong. Is that sitting on the fence? To me it comes down to this.

If you’re a career woman with success on your mind and you find someone to love and who loves you, clear the roadblocks, avoid the rabbit holes and put your money back in your pocket.

Betting on whether a relationship will last through long term, long distance is a gamble you need to REALLY think through before rolling the dice.
