Writer's Compulsion
1/31/2008 1:48:34 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

Being a writer is a terrible affliction. In fact it's almost a disease. The insatiable itch to write seems to control one's life and can never be satisified for succumbing to the urge to produce words in an appealing format for others to read only numbs what must be close to a psychosis.

Why do we do it? The chances of success seem slim and the likelihood of financial reward parallels those pathetic individuals who spend their life watching and hoping for six numbers in a Division One Lotto win.

Writing a book is easy for those whose love of words rules their life. Selling it in the market place where the literary fruits from hundreds of thousands of would be authors deplete the planet's forests, piling up and contributing to mounting greenhouse gas emissions, is an awesome task. Nevertheless, we keep going, poor pathetic dreamers that some of us are.

Don't despair dear reader. I'm not going to slash my wrists, jump from a tall building or seek solace in the bottom of a gin bottle. It's comforting to know I am not alone. So what if Oprah never gives my books a plug? There are countless multitudes who would love to have the "gift of the gab" and the perserverence to see a novel through to the final page.

Stand proud if you are a writer who is yet to be acknowledged. Although you have not been recognised, you are a skilled artisan of the writer's craft and a member of a select group. Every time your pen meets the glossy white unblemished page of your notepad, or you hunt and peck with two fngers at the keys of your computer like a demented hen, you are honing your skills. Speak from your heart. Tune into your emotions. Bare your soul and let the creative juices flow. If nothing else it's a cathartic and healing process.
