THE WRITING BIZ 5/24/2009 4:58:37 AM What do authors do all day on the computer, other than...you know...write their book? Non-writers often don’t understand the myriad of jobs we authors perform every day. For example, I’m not sitting here playing computer games or looking up the latest celebrity news. I’m WORKING. Here are some of the things you’ll find me doing, and likely other authors as well:
Answer an invitation to be a guest blogger on someone else’s site
Confer with colleagues over joint website about to launch Look for The Book Belles coming soon with a new Spring season contest!)
Email critique partner about online chat scheduled for next month
Scan Publishers Lunch for industry news
Answer invitation to speak at local creative writing class
Read and comment on other people’s blogs
Begin notes for my next blog entry
Facebook: Write a quick post; Respond to friend requests; Invite people to follow my blog on Networked Blogs; Respond to comments on my last post; Comment on group sites
Social Networks other than Facebook: Update my profile, add my recent reads, add events
Sign up for Romancing the Holidays booksigning in Altamonte Springs Mall on November 7th
Update the Favorite Links and Photo Album pages on my website
Back up important files
Print mailing envelope to send book for contest prize (see The Book Belles above)
Ongoing research for current WIP
Read listserves, i.e. group emails. I belong to loops for Novelists, Inc., Sisters in Crime, Florida Romance Writers, Southwest FL Romance Writers, Central FL Romance Writers, Mystery Writers of America, Florida Chapter of MWA, Cozy Armchair readers, Romance Writers of America and its various listserves (Kiss of Death chapter, Technology, Industry, PAN, etc.); Murder Must Advertise, Cynthia Sterling’s Market News, and more. From these posts, I glean info on marketing, promotion, research links, state of the industry, agent/editor interviews, computer tips, etc. The wealth of information is astounding. Some of my time is spent following links suggested by other writers for how-to’s on book blog tours, video trailers, publicity ops, etc.
Download articles from the Web to read later.
As you see, these activities can take up all our spare time. That’s why writers are so frazzled these days. Not only do we have to contend with the stages of getting a book from page one to the bookshelf: i.e. writing the story, copy edits, page proofs, and marketing plan, but there’s all the above aspects of a writing career. Maintaining a balance is the key to sanity.
