Another "boundary experience!" 9/24/2009 3:55:18 AM My book, RISING SUN, DISTANT MOUNTAIN, explored "boundary experiences" (more commonly called intuition, instinct,or gut feelings) in some depth. This was the product of several years of doctoral research that culminated in a series of profound, and deeply unsettling, personal experiences.
Gradually, and my contact with the Lakota people contributed greatly to this, I came to understand what happened. I now live in daily contact with the "invisible world" and guide myself accordingly.
Two years ago, I worked for the summer at Navajo State Park in southern Colorado. One day on a hike, I found the skull of a rabbit that had been killed and eaten, probably by a coyote but possibly by a mountain lion. The big cats were quite common that part of the state. Interested, I slipped the skull in my pack and brought it back to Michigan with me when the season ended.
I kept the skull on my desk as a reminder of the summer. The past few months, though, whenever I contemplated it, I was swept by a deep feeling of dismay and regret. It was clear to me...the spirit of this animal had been displaced when I took the skull from its final resting place. It was also clear to me that I had to return it.
That promised to be difficult. My teaching schedule, and my personal finances, made another trip to Colorado impossible. But then a personal training client I'd been working with decided he really wanted to go west and climb some mountains. He even agreed to pay all the expenses. So, off we went.
One day, I left my client to wander through Durango. Alone, I drove back to the state park and with the skull in my hand, returned to the place where I found it. There, I conducted a short ceremony asking for forgiveness from this animal spirit and also asking for guidance as I make my way through this portion of my life.
Hiking back to my truck, I "felt" (and that's the only word that fits) the light change. All around the horizon, the sky was filled with a pulsing yellow/gold light. This lasted until I reached the trailhead. Driving back to Durango, I was fully aware of a profound change. I couldn't indentify the particulars, but there was no doubt...the world around me had changed.
Now that I've returned, those changes play themselves out every day. Returning the skull to its resting place has cleared my own spiritual vision and allowed me to see myself and the world around me in much richer, more accurate, terms.
I'm certain this will make little sense to most readers on this site. There's only one thing I can suggest: read RISING SUN, DISTANT MOUNTAIN and then determine for yourself if this experience has meaning.
Blessings to you!
Alan
