through the storm by robert p. robertson

I can only imagine how frustrating it is for those who evacuated. They obeyed the evacuation order, now they can't get back home. The mayor says there are no services available for comfortable living and don't want anyone to come home just yet. That was the same scenario in katrina, but it took several months to a year for anyone to get back, and many are still stranded and have settled wherever they were displaced.
This backsliding could cause a refusal to evacuate in the next event. People will remember the hardship of returning after obediently evacuating. Every year we experience inclement weather. Do we have to keep a bag packed and ready to go at the slightest whirlwind out of Africa? If we have to live like that, why come back at all. I heard a reporter on the weather channel say, "No one dies from hurricanes in Cuba because it's a totalitarian government. Cubans evacuate when they are told to." It made me wonder why an entire city is herded like domesticated animals; what is the purpose for it? To save lives? To get people out of harm's way? To make people obedient to our so-called leaders? I don't get it. I feel an ulterior motive in such a large scale stage. In my book, THROUGH THE STORM, I felt the same ulterior motive, which is why I sneaked through three checkpoints at the Convention Center to return to my home. This time, I stayed because I still see no sense in evacuating, but when I heard the mayor backslide, that old feeling returned. In the past, we never evacuated. We stayed in our home and survived. The Coast Guards, Red Cross, and Salvation Army came out to pass out ice, water, food, and medical supplies, and when the water went down and the streets dried up, we came out and cleaned up. What happened to those times, man?
