Rainy Days
3/31/2011 12:37:52 PM
A short memory on gray, rainy days!
Today is one of those dreary, gray, rainy, stormy days that are perfect for staying home or sleeping in late. Possibly a perfect time to cuddle deep into an afghan and read that book you've been wanting to get done or veg out in front of the TV all day.

I went past some schools today and thought of all those kind of days that we spent in various classrooms. How many of those days did we wish our parents had let us stay home? Although it seemed like a perfect study day at school, it really was a long, sleepy day to work through. You couldn't go outside for P.E. or hang out with friends at lunch, and if you were not lucky enough to ride a bus, you were drenched and soaking wet when you finally reached home after walking all the way. My sisters and I had to walk about a mile to school each day, winter or spring. My dad didn't take us no matter what the weather called for. We used to dress in extra clothes to stay warm on the way. I remember my legs feeling like ants crawling on them once we reached the school. We'd take off our slacks, extra sweater, boots and begin the thawing out process.

Many times we say, "Ah, those were the days." But I do remember not being happy about those days. I would rather have had someone drive us to school and pick us up in the winter. Now, I say, "You know, I still don't like the gray, cold, rainy, dreary, stomy days, even here in 'sunny' Florida."
