Holding my Baby 8/30/2008 7:26:38 AM I suppose Labor Day weekend is a good time to birth a baby...
Anyone within three miles of me heard me scream with excitement. The UPS man had literally left the hot-off-the-press copy of my novel on my doorstep. I held it, breathed in the fresh pages, and wanted to dance. However, the screened-in entrance to the side of my house is tiny and room to move is a problem. Nevertheless, I managed to make a phone call on my cell. "My book is here!" I shouted to my boyfriend. "Rain Song has arrived!" And believe me, it is a beautiful baby.
For two years I wrote, edited, rewrote, neglected, and spent months resurrecting this child. When an agent in northern Virginia called to say she'd represent me, I did dance (I was in the kitchen at the time and there is room to move about there). When my agent sold Rain Song and another novel (How Sweet It is will be released in 2009), I took my kids out to Kanki to celebrate.
Like any other novelist, holding my book with my name on the cover has been a dream filling many years.
By October 1, Rain Song will line the shelves of bookstores. I will try not to embarrass anyone when I see it at Barnes and Noble and feel my heart swirl.
Until then, I will pick my copy up from the kitchen table to open, to read, and to smile at.
