Two Sides of IKE
9/17/2008 12:19:11 PM

There is allways two sides to everything!
Saturday morning after the hardest part of Ike hit, we started seeing individuals coming out of their home and began walking around, and investigating the damage that was done and checking on one another our Apartment Building. Everywhere you turned it was neighbor asking neighbor if they had food that needed to be cooked or water that needed to be boiled. Neighbors were helping each other get to the store, and picking up stuff for one another. Later on, our neighbor across from us came out side to investigate the damage around her. This particular neighbor is someone that our family would say hello to, but not too much other conversation beyond that. (Shame on us)
My son who is 9 asked if he could go ask if she needed anything cooked, and he also wanted to take her some cookies. My son took the tasty treats to our neighbor and came back with some of his own from her. Then it hit me, it took a simple act of thoughtfulness, and kindness from a 9 year old to break a barrier between neighbors. Because of this act, we came to know our neighbor more, and a bridge was formed, and it took a storm and a 9 year old to do it.
Sunday morning came and our Church was still without power. Our children were asking about Church, and we heard God say, “Why do Church, or praise and worship have to be confined to four walls, or what you are wearing”, so we obeyed God and had Church Service that morning with neighbors that we knew and did not know. Family’s that you see around town, but not in Church, are coming together in one accord, praying for one another, for so many others that were less fortunate than us. We read out of the Bible and held hands. It was the most amazing thing I have seen in my life. We were all right outside in front of our apartment, pajamas, bare feet, shorts; whatever individuals had on, it did not matter.
On Monday 2 days after the storm, once again neighbors came together to help and assist in the cleanup process around the property, this was just another example of bringing neighbors together with a common situation; unfortunately it took a hurricane to do it. Again the Lord said to me,” why must it take a storm for each one of us to know who our neighbors are, and how can you evangelize and show love and compassion for one another if you are hiding behind fences or closed doors in our life?
As we all cleaned up and moved debris out of the way, children were talking amongst themselves about the Hurricane and the loss of power and they themselves were trying to make since of all the destruction that they saw with their own little eyes. My husband and I told not only our own children, but there friends that even though it looks confusing and scary, it isn’t if you look at it another way. If they see with their Spiritual eyes, they will see that God has a reason for everything, and yes God will rebuild, but God will re-build in many ways in many people besides what the eye can see or the hands can touch.
So my friends, on one side of IKE there was destruction and devastation, uncertainty and darkness. But the other sides is love, compassion, as well as barriers being broken, and let us not forget my brothers and sisters in Christ from this point on, let’s not wait for another storm to come our way in order to do what the Lord has called us to do.
