Drama of Life and Death 5/14/2009 7:44:15 AM I am a fan of Leonard Cohen's "Anthem." I love the phrases,
"The birds they sing
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say."
A favorite part of my day is breakfasting with my husband at the dining room table by candlelight. (I have a poem about this.) Watching the birds feed in the flower garden outside is a bonus.
Disturbing this tranquility the other day was the sound of a loud thump against the window. Tiny red and orange feathers flew solo in the air. Whizzing after was a young hawk.
"Oh, no!" I wailed. The cardinal had gotten up at the break of day and said "start again," and he didn't get to continue. I took this drama personally. Then quick as a wink, I saw the young cardinal perched on the top of the feeder and the hawk hiding in a nearby bush.
"Oh, don't you see him?" I lamented. Again, quick as a wink, he flew into the bush with the hawk. Not taking into account the young cardinal was stunned, I was dumbfounded and angry at the bird. There was a skirmish in the bush. Both birds flew out, the cardinal in the lead.
Neither bird seemed old enough to deal with the drama unfolding, but perhaps my prayer for the cardinal helped.
