My Column v. Publishing
4/4/2011 10:14:12 AM
After over six years of writing a column titled "Rambling through lie," a new editor took over. She contacted all four free lance columnists for the paper and told us she wanted us to write only about our community.
There is no way I would limit myself to such a narrow focus. I write about what is happening, what has happened in the past, what might happen in the future and my voice is as if I were talking to a friend. In addition, I write a lot of columns on traveling, as that is something I love to do.
So, I wished my new editor well, but parted ways with her and the paper.
The result? At first, I missed writing the column; however, I didn't miss having to meet a weekly deadline. It's amazing how much freer I have felt since then...truly amazing! And, to make it even better, I've found a site on the internet where I can write columns (They call them articles.) to my heart's content setting my own deadline and even with the prospect of being paid!
Finally, as a small press pubisher (very small - firesidepublisher.com or booksby joan.com) the stress that I'd felt getting everything done that needs to be done, when it needs to be done, and to keep up with my authors and try to market their books (and mine!)has been greatly eleviated. Apparently, that deadline and knowing that I had to come up with a topic every week at the same time was more stressful than I had imagined.
It's been a happy ending to a new and happy beginning!
