Schedule My Relaxation, Please
10/2/2010 3:32:26 PM
Ever wonder how an author relaxes? Ever wonder if we actually do relax? I wondered the same thing, then discovered it for myself last weekend in San Diego at the Hotel del Coronado.
I met Pookie in San Diego last weekend as a few of you might have seen from the pictures I posted a few days ago. This was a very rare trip for us and one that almost didn't happen since he was attending a conference. Fortunately, that ended Friday morning, so he thought it might be nice if I joined him for a couple of days. The rareness of a trip like this stems from the fact we that almost never go anywhere together without having a huge agenda of things we need to do, see or attend. The majority of what we do is simply rarely ever relaxing, even when he comes home for a weekend.

My Friday morning started an hour earlier than I usually get up for work, which I knew I'd pay for later that night since there's a 3 hour time difference. Anyway, I was upgraded to first class for the flight there. Sweet! Right until I found myself sitting next to a man whose wife and 3 year old daughter were sitting across from us. She apparently got tired of sitting next to her mother halfway through the flight, so she wound up on dad's lap. And when the flight attendant went through the cabin and asked that the girl sit back in her own seat for landing, she pitched a bitch fit. This little hellion continued pitching a bitch fit until we were on the ground taxing. The parents didn't seem to mind. The rest of the passengers did. The flight crew did. But, you know, it must have been us, not them. I'm not entirely convinced that my suggestion of considering military pre-school was appreciated, either.

I couldn't resist texting my boss when I got off the plane, mostly because I knew he'd be concerned about me and want to know how the trip was progressing.

Moi: Ah, first class!
Boss: Mother(expletive)!
Moi: I never (expletive) a mother before.
Boss: Have fun.

See? Concerned.

The airport was easy to navigate and I soon found the shuttle service Pookie recommended. His driver had taken the group around the city and gave them a little tour. My driver was a slightly large woman with a mustache going through the change of life...and she was NOT happy about it.

Fortunately, the ride itself was, in a word, breathtaking. I rarely visit anywhere along the ocean and I've never, ever seen aircraft carriers in the water before. Movies? Sure. But in person? Never. Between the view of the city, the bridge to the island--which for some reason reminded me of Key West--the drive past the local shops and then the ride up to the hotel itself...wow. It's the kind of experience movies capture that few of us ever do for ourselves. It was borderline glamorous, but on a budget since I'm a po boy.

The room Pookie had been staying in had a gorgeous view of the ocean (the picture of the view is posted in the San Diego folder) and I'm sure the free wireless added to his enjoyment over the previous two days. But that view. I decided to snap a picture of it with my phone and send it to my boss just in case he was still concerned.

Boss's Text: (censored) you!

See? Still concerned.

Pookie joined me about an hour later once his conference ended and it was a relief that he looked so relaxed. The realization struck me then that I really hadn't relaxed in a very long time, only I hadn't realized it. He was talking to me, telling me what was going on, asking me about the new job, my mother(censored) boss (heh heh) and then switched the topic to my parents. All I remember is him saying something about me being a good son to them and the floodgates opened.

Was I good son? Have I been a good son? Am I a good son? I'm definitely the wrong person to ask because I just don't feel that way. I still lose my patience, I still second-guess myself, I still find myself thinking thoughts that just don't strike me as thoughts a good son would think. Is this normal when dealing with Alzheimer's? I wish I knew, but I don't. My mother has shown so much strength, more than she thought she had in her. I'm still trying to follow her example and feel I'm failing miserably. I think I told my guy that if it ever happens that I develop the disease, don't even bother putting me on the medication. Just let it run its course as quickly as possible and be done with it. And no, I don't feel that my father should stop taking the medication. I just don't want to go through the things I see happening to him.

So yes, I broke down a bit, then he suggested he walk around the main street of the island and check out any decent places we might want to go to for dinner. There's a lot of seafood places and, thank God, no fast food joints. I soooooo didn't miss those, not one bit. It wasn't until we were heading back that I found Happy Sushi across the street from the hotel. Sushi makes me happy. Sushi makes Pookie happy. Happy Sushi was appropriately named! And since it was an hour before Happy Hour at Happy Sushi, we decided to take a walk in the ocean.

Mind you, "Jaws" did wonders for my desire to ever get close to the ocean. "Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus" made me realize that I was going to be screwed whether I stayed on the beach or got my feet wet anyway, so I might as well enjoy myself. Well, we walked in the ocean, watched the waves bring seaweed up, Pookie pointed out the airpockets in the seaweed, we watch clams work their way back into the sand, picked up some seashells and found a huge, lovely sand dollar--it survived the trip home, too! We had never done this together before. 15 years and we'd never walked in the ocean and taken the time out to enjoy something so simple. It was absolutely lovely.

We switched from shorts to jeans in the room before heading over to Happy Sushi. The plan was just to grab a couple Happy Hour appetizers, then head out somewhere else for the main course. Well, we enjoyed the Japanese beer, soft shell crab, shrimp tempura and octopus balls (yes, they're tiny) so much that we ordered another round. Color ourselves full, but not so full that we didn't also walk down to a local ice cream shop and order some peanut butter ice cream. Mmmmm!

I took a shower around 8:30 that night and when Pookie got out of the shower at 9 (12 midnight my time back home), I was very much asleep. We left the windows open and slept to the sound of the ocean outside, another first for us.

Saturday started off on an amusing note. I'd contacted a bookstore in San Diego to see if I could arrange a book signing, only they didn't do signings due to a lack of interest from the community. But, I'd contacted the owner and arranged to come in and sign copies of Gaylias that he had in the store. So Pookie and I took a $25 taxi ride into the city and found the bookstore. They had a single copy. I signed it, but we laughed about it. We continued laughing about it while grabbing something from a local coffee shop until a friend from MySpace and Facebook who I've been chatting with for at least 5 years swung by and picked us up.

Eric was a delightful tour guide and conversationalist who showed us around, suggested a place for lunch, took us into the gaslight district, joined us for ice cream and then suggested walking around an outdoor mall. He even gave us a lift back to the hotel. Talk about a gentleman! But don't let the nice things I say about take away from his being a little devil when he goes out on the prowl. lol

Pookie and I walked in the ocean again, took more picture, went to Happy Sushi again, had a delicious hot chocolate in an outdoor part of the hotel with an unexpectedly yummy banana pecan roll before going back to the room, packing, showering and falling asleep listening to the ocean again.

Maybe it was the place. The hotel is apparently extremely well-known (Hotel del Coronado), is very impressive in its architecture and size and there's just something about it. Folks have been saying that there's something about it for years and I didn't expect to find myself taken with it, but Pookie was right off the bat and I can say there's something both captivating about it and that influences a part of you to just let go and enjoy the moment.

We want to go back next year and I hope we do.

btw, I didn't get the first class upgrade on the way back home, but we did meet a lovely woman in the Delta lounge named Carol who I flew back with and sat next to. It was a nice way to end the weekend.

It's just a shame that we have 51 weeks to go before we can head back again.
