Benefits of the Mayan sun
2/15/2010 4:28:52 PM
I recently returned from some well-needed rest and rehabilitation on the Rivera Maya in Quintana Roo Mexico. The trip was advised after a physical setback in October followed by a long mid-western winter. Although I have spent a good deal of time floating around the Caribbean it is always accelerating to hang out where the water is only a few degrees cooler than the air and the sun never stops shinning. Such as it is on the Yucatan peninsula.

Paradise however, is not without itís trouble. Itís curious to note that many underdeveloped regions where the Sun is king suffer from historically dark pasts. The Yucatan is no exception. The Mayan culture is rich in achievement dating back 4000
Years. Sometimes called the Egypt of the Americas, they excelled in art, agriculture, mathematics and architecture. They also worshiped over 400 deities including numerous Sun gods while practicing human sacrifice.

Although the Maya coastline draws millions of vacationers every year who spend millions of dollars, the bulk of the money goes into foreign coffers and a corrupt government. The Mayans themselves sell trinkets on the corner earning pennies. The crash of the Mayan Empire was predictable. I was rejuvenated in my short stay in the Mayan sun, but it is my faith in the other Son that endures and will ultimately result in my complete recovery.
