when YOUR HOUSE becomes the POOR HOUSE
9/21/2009 2:14:29 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

By 2008, we were feeding between 800 to 1000 families a week. The numbers began to drop again, once fuel prices declined.
As I read through the articles on the authorsden, I came across this quote. “if one can’t afford to live…Why should society be forced to keep them alive? Well, this is socialism…A distribution plan supposedly designed to bring the downtrodden up. However, what happens instead is that socialism brings those who are ‘up’… down! .“

I have worked in a food ministry in my community church as a volunteer for about ten years. When we began this ministry, we had about fourteen families that needed help. Most of these families were in our church. As the economy began to go south under George W. Bush, our numbers began to increase. By 2008, we were feeding between 800 to 1000 families a week. The numbers began to drop again, once fuel prices declined. We are now at about 500 to 600 families. I talk to these families weekly and understand their situations. Most of these people are working two jobs and some have lost their jobs due to plant closers. One family has a five year old son with a brain tumor and the cost of traveling for treatment has all but destroyed the family. The above quote is not new to me, because this same kind of statement was made by a very dear friend of mine who was a strong conservative in 2004. I recall during a board meeting a statement he made “ If these people can’t afford to live, then they should get a second job.” I reminded him that most of them already had second jobs but could not live due to the economy. I totally forgive this man for this statement, I am uncomfortable bringing it up but I must to make my point. My friend was an Engineer in a local factory at the time this statement was made and spent every Saturday on the golf course. In 2007, the factory he worked at closed without notice. The struggle of trying to find a job and meet his obligations took a toll on him. He began to get depressed and came to us for help. We helped him get back on his feet and pay some of his obligations off. We supplied him with food and kept him going until he secured work. This man has a new outlook on life, he comes by on his days off and helps in our food ministry. He also donates to our benevolence fund to help other needy families. It easy to be critical of the poor, it easy to mock those in need and it’s easy to call those who defend the poor “Socialist.” What is not easy is when YOUR HOUSE becomes the POOR HOUSE. When this occurs, you have to go to those you have mocked and ask for help. I have never reminded my friend of his statements and never would, because life has a way to expressing what others never say. May God be with you and this nation. May God allow us to see the world through the eyes of others. May God teach us to be kind without judgment of others.
