Rich Put His Foot Down
Ruthie here: It’s been a tough few days, what with the tiff between Mary Clay and Penny Sue, as well as Guthrie’s drama. Thank Heaven Rich put his foot down and forced his impetuous lover to apologize. It wasn’t a pleasant encounter because Penny Sue is loath to admit an error, and Mary Clay felt betrayed.

Mary reminded Penny Sue that she’d been given better treatment than most female sleuths. Her car didn’t explode in every book forcing her to drive an old clunker. She hadn’t been shot or seriously injured. She’d regained her wealth after losing it all to Madoff. And, she hadn’t even gained that much weight. Penny Sue’s eyes bulged at Mary’s weight comment, but a look from Rich kept her in check.

After another look from Rich, Penny Sue apologized for being bossy and inconsiderate. The words had clearly been well rehearsed, but barely made it through her tight lips. Mary was silent for a beat, then burst out laughing. “I made you a headstrong Leo, so I guess I’m partially responsible.”

The tension dissolved and Penny Sue grinned. “Of course, it is partially your fault.”

At that, Leigh quickly popped the cork on a bottle of wine and suggested a toast to our shared love and friendship. After the second glass of wine and round of gushy toasts, Penny Sue wrote down all of the passwords on napkins and vowed not to pull a stunt like that again. Mary quickly pocketed her password and agreed to let the DAFFODILS keep the Amazon feed, with the proviso she could make a comment from time to time. There were nods all around.

Then a bottle of scotch appeared from who knows where. Guthrie, who’d been uncharacteristically silent to this point, piped in, “I’m so glad you’ve made up. With Timothy gone,” a tear streaked down his cheek, “I was afraid Mary would write me out of the books.”

Mary put her arm around his shoulder. “Not a chance, buddy. I have big plans for you.”

Lord knows what that means. Light and love. —Ruthie
