Penny Sue’s Chance Encounter At The Ritz
My name is Nana, and folks seem to have the wrong idea about me! I was having high tea at the Ritz Carleton with my granddaughter Pamela, who by the way still isn’t married! Okay, she doesn’t like me talking about it so I guess she wouldn’t like me blogging about it either. So I’m not going to say anything. Anyway I went to the restroom at the Ritz and there is this lady talking to someone on the phone and if I didn’t know any better I’d say she was talking about me! Now, I’ve never seen her before in my life, but she sure was describing someone who sounded a lot like me. Except of course for the psychic part. It really gets my goat when folks start saying I’m psychic. I am not psychic! I tell you, just because I talk to folks who are dead, people think I’m some kind of psychic. I’d like to know who’s been telling tales out of school! How do so many people know my business? I wouldn’t put it past Madeline, that conniving Southern belle ghost! If there was a good looking man involved, why, she’d tell him, dead or not!

I guess you’re wondering what’s got me all heated up. Well I’ll tell you. My granddaughter, Pamela is still single after all the hard work I put into matchmaking her with her true love in NANA. And then to find out that Madeline and Monty (my ghostly former friends,) were lying to me all along!

Now I get calls and letters from all kinds of people wanting me to talk to their dead loved ones. I ask you, do you know all the living people in the world? No you don’t, so why should I know all the dead people? That’s not to say that I don’t know a fair amount of things. Like I know that there is a sorority girl who’s looking for me, she’s one of those that thinks I’m a psychic. Well, I don’t know about all that, what I do know is that Miss Sorority needs to watch out for a woman like Madeline. You know, two-faced, evil, couldn’t trust her with your cat, let alone, your granddaughter’s future! But I am not a psychic!

You don’t need to be a psychic to know young folks these days don’t know whether they are coming or going! Always looking for something wrong when everything is right. Come to think about it, I might just talk to some of the folk who think I’m a psychic. I get kind of lonely these days, since I no longer associate with Madeline and Monty. But I’m only going to talk to people who I get a good feeling about. I almost went right up to the woman at the Ritz and introduced myself. But I knew Pamela would be a mite put out. So I just walked up to the lady and patted her on the cheek and said, “You’re a good girl.” Then went on my way. Sometimes people need to hear that about themselves.

Now, here’s the thing, I got a tingle in my hand when I patted her cheek, like I know more about her than I know, if you know what I mean. But, really I am not psychic!

Guest Contributor Beverly Poitier-Henderson, author of NANA, available on Kindle.
