Sincere Personal Interest
3/1/2012 5:36:04 AM
We all need to give heed to suggestions and advice from time to time. That's a given. What makes our advice easier to take is sincere personal interest. If we take time to show people we're genuinely interested in them, then we'll find that they're going to be more susceptible to what we have to say.
Sometimes a negative reaction doesn't result from the suggestion itself. Instead, it often comes from the cold, impersonal way someone offered it. Most married couples know this better than anyone else. We also know this if we work for someone whose authority has gone to their head, so to speak.
True, some people are going to react negatively regardless of how the person tempers their words. These feel that no one is ever supposed to correct them, which, of course, is their problem. Nevertheless, reasonable people will tend to respond positively when we show them that we're genuinely interested in who they are.
