Low Arvie news 6/22/2010 1:24:03 AM Tuesday morning 10.40am.
Well, the grass was cut on Saturday, it hasn't rained a drop and the baler is just arriving at this very minute! How stress free is all that? For the first time in nine years I have slept soundly all through silage time! Now all that will need to be done is cart the bales in one at a time!! (both books) Mind you, there won't be too many this time round as the grass only started growing a month ago and so its not a heavy crop. We will have to do the two biggest fields again in September to hope to have anywhere near enough for the winter!
Poor Lady Zoe is still waiting for her calf so I am still running in and out every five minutes. She has been pregnant for 288 days now and must be getting very fed up carrying round 50kg of calf inside her. I know I was fed up just before Catherine was born. Holly is doing fine now and waiting for a playmate!
The new steers have settled in well and are getting used to our routine (it doesn't take them long to learn how, when and where they get fed!).
Once the grass is baled and the bales collected, we will leave the grass to regrow again for about a week and then we will be weaning last year's calves and giving their mothers a rest and time to dry off before their next calf is born. I hate weaning them really but they are now eight months old - teenage in cow terms - and ready to stand on their own two, sorry I mean four feet. They make a bit of a hullaballo for a day or two when they lose their mother's 'milk bar' but they soon get used to the idea. I think the mothers mind less at this stage because they can feel new life inside them - that's my theory anyway! The cows will come over into the silage fields and the calves will stay in Eastside.
I had this lovely message this morning from a lady in Chicago who found me on LinkedIn:
Hi Linda,
Oh my goodness, checked out your website and felt a tugging to come there as soon as I'm independently weathly, lol. In lieu of that will probably get a copy of the book.
I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.
How nice was that? So I joined her network. I've only just started to fathom out LinkedIn - its not as easy to use as AD but I seem to be getting the hang of it a bit. Its a question of building up a network of connections and reaches all around the world. I love this new small world we live in - feels like we're all neighbours!
Take care,
Lxx
