The Tao of Tsau -- Knowing
6/3/2010 9:26:31 AM
"How do you know????"

Today we are bombarded by data, but seldom by information.  Yung always reminded us to question what we knew, to question the apparent facts, to challenge the assumptions, and to root out hidden assumptions.

Many of us speak from authority because we are afraid to say "I don't know."  Often information that we receive while managing projects comes from people who speak with authority but who have limited knowledge.  Do not be afraid to ask questions that dive below surface appearances.

In fact, a project manager must be smart about the questions that are asked.  Managers need to develop the skill to recognize and ask the RIGHT questions in any situation.  Your goal should be to create a bubble of clarity in the midst of ambiguity.

Your reports and communications should allow people to see the level of confidence that you have about information.  Always give your stakeholders a sense of how well you know or believe the information being presented.  Simply because fact is espoused by a charismatic expert should not cause you to suspend your own thinking muscles.

Verse 52* of the Tao has a small pearl of wisdom nears its end.

"Have faith
Follow your own shining
Be aware of your own awareness
On the darkest nights you will not stumble
On the brightest days you will not blink"

*Tao Te Ching, The Definitive Edition, Lao Tzu with Translation and Commentary by Jonathan Star, Jeremy P Tarcher/Penguin, New York, 2001, page 65
