Goodbye Uncle Paul

It will be three days before I say goodbye to my family in Vallejo. I just know that there will be kissing and hugging. No crying anymore for that is way past the first time I was moving on to Portland. I will miss the blue skies or the fog whichever comes. I will miss the house where I lay my head. It just did not matter where I lay it, be in an actual bed or an air bed. I will miss my foray to Oakland and Berkeley; for it was in these places, I spent a good deal of my life, right on Piedmont Avenue, downtown Oakland and Jack London Square, Rockridge, College Avenue and the University of California.
Lauren, my niece, had moved on, too. She had become a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco; and in order to avoid the long commute to Vallejo, she and her fiancée decided to move on together near the hospital. This Thursday, she invited me along with my other niece, Taylor, to spend a day with her. We would watch a movie on television, walk the neighborhood and collect dollar shells at Ocean Beach. Then in the evening, I will be treated to dinner out on the town. It is a nice gesture, now that she is earning her own living.
But Lauren, before she joined her fiancée in San Francisco and whenever I am to leave Vallejo, stands guard with her camera ready to shoot while I give everyone kisses and hugs. And as I pack my car and ready to drive away, she would shoot pictures. And then, she would drop her camera. As I drive away, she would run after my car as far as I speed up, waving her arms and saying goodbye to me.
This Friday, there will be no Lauren, anymore. I shall miss this act, this whimsical act that alludes to her child-like attitude I find so endearing. I shall be happy to remember this event, the happy growing up years. Now, she had grown to where I can just remember those days.
When I come back, although there will be no Lauren waiving goodbye to me, the ghost of those days will reverberate. It will be like a tolling bell, strong when I am near; as I move farther, the toll becomes ever fainter. I know that I will come back again and see Lauren and the family. There will be the customary kissing and hugging when I return as well as when I leave. Yes, indeed, I shall return and be witness to all of these, again; maybe this summer.
